Only a 30 minutes drive from town the Lao Spirit Resort was the perfect escape from Luang Prabang city during our stay.We enjoyed the scenery there a lot, Mountains, forest, river and lot of vegetable gardens. The Bungalows have a very special touch and somebody went really into details. The room was very clean, and very spacious. The terrace is the highlight of the Bungalow, large, overlooking the river and mountains its the perfect place to find some relaxing time. They have a beautlful garden and plenty of insects at night time. We watched the elephants bathing in the morning only a ten minutes walk from the resort and we did some elephant riding right after the bathing.
The second day we booked a kayaktour downriver with a stop at the waterfall, which did not carry a lot of water due to dry season. So we can recommend this place for everyone who likes to unwind a bit after an exiting trip through Laos.
The staff was very personal and friendly and the food was very delicious with a good choice and yummy breakfasts.
Don't miss it!!!!

The road to Lao Spirit Resort is a rocky mess, but once you arrive at this jungle retreat you'll be glad you made the effort. The views are simply breathtaking--especially during sunrise and sunset. The bungalows are like spacious luxury treehouses with enormous porches, traditional Lao accents, a spa-like bathroom and an outdoor rain shower. I had the best sleep of my month-long trip amidst the natural sounds of the jungle (in fact, I missed dinner because I slept right through it). I didn't expect much from the restaurant (because the resort only has a handful of rooms), but both my partner and I were pleasantly surprised by our breakfast: His eggs were organic and farm fresh ("the best I've ever tasted) and my noodle soup was delicious. The owners clearly had a vision and a dream and it's amazing to experience the results and their dedication to the resort, the area and those who visit. This is a great sidetrip from Luang Prabang (about 15 miles away); it's a short walk from Elephant Camp where we watched the elephants eating and being bathed for free . We stayed only one night but would have loved to stay another night...or two.

We stayed for two nights at the Lao Spirit Resort and the peace and quiet of the location with the wonderful views overlooking the river with the mountains behind, certainly refreshed our batteries, which were starting to wind down after all the hustle and bustle of our trip.
The accommodation was extremely comfortable and spacious. We particularly enjoyed sitting on the terrace of our bungalow in the evening and watching the sun go down. The beds were softer than most we had experienced during our stay in Cambodia and Laos!
The rooms were kept clean and the towels were changed daily. There was a very large bathroom, with an interesting shower arrangement. The shower was outside and after a couple of misgivings about being looked at we realised that the showers had been cleverly built so that noone could possibly peep in.
There were no air conditioners in the rooms,( although there were large ceiling fans), nor were there T.V's, hairdryers etc but with such a marvellous backdrop, unnecessary noise would seem to be a travesty to the surroundings and the ethos of the resort. My one query would be as to whether in the hottest part of the year the ceiling fans would cool down the rooms enough, for us in February, they did their job adequately.
The one thing that the Lao Spirit Resort had above all our other forms of accommodation was the friendliness of the staff and their kindness and willingness to look after you. All of the staff were exceptionally pleasant and seemed to take great delight in making everything as satisfactory as they could for the guests. The proprietors, Thomas and Christine, have obviously put in a lot of time and hard work training the staff, and their hard work has certainly proved successful.
We had thought that as there was nowhere else to eat except in the restaurant at the Lao Spirit Resort, we may have felt that we were being overcharged or not given value for money, but quite the contrary, the chef is obviously of a high standard and all the food we had there was delicious. The Spring Rolls are truly scrumptious!
We had gone elephant riding one morning and did not get to have breakfast until well after the allotted time but there was someone at the restaurant ready to prepare and serve us breakfast and we were not made to feel that we were putting them out.
Our time there was spent visiting the local village, a short walk away and getting up early to watch the elephants bathing and then to go riding on them. We could have done much more, we were offered to be taken on boat trips or treks; but we had gone there to relax and the Lao Spirit Resort certainly fulfilled this function.
A delightful stay, thank you!

We stayed at the Lao Spirit for 2 nights. The staff was excellent! We were very well treated. There was always someone in the restaurant with good english and the food was extraordinary!! They serve the best Spring Rolls I've ever tasted - and I've tried a lot of spring rolls. Their bread was fresh and delicious. The Lao noodles for breakfast were also my favorite of the trip. Finally, words cannot describe the fried bananas with homemade coconut ice cream!

We stayed in a beautiful bungalow set on the riverbank with incredible views, a huge veranda and a big wall of windows bringing the outside in (as does the lack of screening!). The beds were clean and comfortable with mosquito netting available. The bath was spacious and the outside shower was great, though we would have appreciated it more had the temperature been warmer. It's true, as other reviewers have pointed out, that the plumbing could use some work. The toilet ran slowly. Our water pressure was adequate. We found we had enough warm water in the afternoon but not in the morning when the outside temperature was low. The addition of screening would also improve the bungalow. There were few bugs around in January but we did have some lizards taking up residence.

Having said this, however, the Lao Spirit is a beautiful and serene rural escape. It reminded me of the bungalows we rented on safari in Kenya. If you come here expecting that rustic, outdoors type of experience, you will not be disappointed!

  • Liked — Breathtaking location
  • Disliked — Some would find it too rustic, but we didn't mind

When i was planning our trip to Laos, we want to go to a elephant ride, for one day. The hotel nearest to a elephant camp, was this one, Lao Spirit. I was not sure about it because last year we was in a ecolotge in India and we didn't love it.
I contact with Laos Spirit by mail and i book with them, airport transfer to hotel (near 40 minutes from Luang Prabang), elephant ride, 1 night, and transfer to come back.
When we arrive to airport, Thomas, the owner, was waiting for us, pic up, and drive to hotel. The way to hotel is very nice in the countriside and Thomas answer all my questions about country.
(he comes from Germany but has big knowledge from Laos)
And when finally arrive there, we get a big surprise, because hotel was up level, most than our expectations. Our small house, was all in wood and very very very clean.
When we went to diner at restaurant, and get another surprise, because you canot go anywhere, is very far from everiwhere, and usually these places, put prices very very expensives. The menu prices, was quite similar than other hotels in Laos. (cheap)
Breakfast is not like buffet, you order and they come with it.
Really lovely place.
When we stay there, the weather was not hot, very confortable. The room has only fan, but was enought for us.
Staf was supperb in pur opinion. They show us how to walk to next village, and we went there with a young boy who work in hotel. We ask for visit the village school and he show the school and all village to us.
Sleep is this hotel was great, just in front of river, very pleasant.
Our elephant ride was also a success, Thomas take care to book for us a good guide.
We will come again.

  • Liked — the room, landscape when we open window, the staff, bed, trips...
  • Disliked — perhaps if you go on hot weather, can be to much warm
