“everything it says on the tin”

The Lao Spirit Resort is run by a German couple, Tomas and Christine. It is a bumpy road away from Luang Prabang, and this gives it and its surrounds a peaceful and serene atmosphere. The 5 bungalows are clean and spacious. Each has an uninterrupted view of the river khan. The on-site restaurant provides good healthy local food well prepared and served.
The staff are well looked after by the owners but you must be prepared to be tolerant of people who have no concept of international travel, tastes or expectations. So be tolerant. Most of the workers have not been outside of their local village.
occasionally long-tail boats pass by on the way to the waterfall or some other tourist locations on the river, but these did not disturb us at all.

Spend some time in lunge probing itself but a few days at the Spirit will be well rewarded.

Room Tip: each bungalow faces the river. no 1 is the quietest, but all are good.

“Hold your breath and remember the view”

This resort is truly beautiful. Sitting in the comfortable reclining chairs on your bungalow terrace overlooking the Nam Khan river, watching fishing boats poling by, tourist boats motoring by, women and children collecting seaweed and tending their crops on the far bank...The rooms are spacious and beds are comfortable. I stayed here with my teenage son and daughter, and we had two bungalows. Mine had a bath as well as the outdoor shower. The bath was a bonus as the mornings and evenings were far cooler (in December) than we had anticipated. Also, my son and daughter found that they had to stagger showers as the hot water ran out. But really, considering where you are and the vagaries of generators, it was not a problem. Wifi doesn't reach all the bungalows and can be unreliable, but if you really need it then there is a strong connection in reception. Otherwise, just means reading a lot of books. We booked two of the activities - the day trek and kayaking and the elephant ride and trek. The first was the highlight of our visit to Laos. It is strenuous (but we are not trekkers) but unbelievably beautiful, thought provoking and humbling. The kayaking is easy. The elephant ride and trek is run through the neighboring elephant camp. It was not quite such a highlight, however the trek led us up from the bottom of the Tad Sae falls and was stunning. I'm very glad we did this, as on the previous day, whilst kayaking, we dropped into the falls. Whilst very pretty, it was also quite touristy. If we had not done the trek we would not have gained a full appreciation of just how beautiful these falls are.
The food at the resort is delicious, and the service good. I particulalry liked the Laotian breakfast. Keep in mind that, although their English may not be perfect and you may have to repeat your order, most of the staff will already be trilingual in Lao, Khmu and Hmong, so hesitation over English is no problem. If I were to make any suggestions, they would be:A) shorten the menu (it is very extensive and with only 5 bungalows, it must be difficult to keep all the ingredients fresh, particularly considering the generator). Maybe 4 European and 4 Laotian dishes only. Then they might consider making the tariff inclusive of all meals, excluding drinks. It is not as if there is any choice of restaurant there! B) there are no coffee and tea making facilities in the bungalows. I know that they say it is because of bugs and animals, however, to enjoy a cup of tea whilst on the bungalow terrace means making the trip to the restaurant (all winding paths and steps), ordering and then juggling the teapot and cup back along paths and steps. Easier to have a kettle etc placed on each balcony. C) place some reclining chairs on the restaurant terrace in the afternoon, as it is the best place for sun. Apart from that, take time out to relax and reflect and remember the beautiful places in this world.

“A treasure of a location. Great experience”

A great hotel/resort set in a beautiful more remote place just outside Luang Prabang.
Included in the price was elephant riding, a 3 hour trek into the hills to see a village and waterfall which was all extremely enjoyable.
The food in the hotels restaurant is excellent, freshly cooked and authentic, together with very friendly and unassuming staff.

“So peaceful”

This is one of the most memorable places I have stayed in. To sit on the balcony of your bungalow and watch the mist swirling around the mountains over the river is so relaxing and a world away from one's bustling city life back home. The surrounding gardens with bougainvilleas and native birds complement the bungalows and add to the magic. The restaurant has some of the best food we had in our whole month in Laos. The managers and staff were also very friendly and helpful. We did the elephant trek, kayaking and trekking on foot and enjoyed every moment. The day kayaking and visiting tribal villages was especially interesting, watching the little Hmong boys play "frisbee" with their rubber thongs (flip flops) and the little girls play hopscotch. Would love to return

Room Tip: Bungalow nearest to the river.

“Relaxing stay”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 20 December 2011

We booked the 2 day package with elephant ride and trek to a waterfall. The resort is beautiful and fits in perfectly with the local surroundings. The hotel owners have made a big effort from the authentic buildings to the hiring of local people to staff the hotel.

The food in the restaurant is great - really tasty and great value. We had the Nuad Phaen Boran massage on the deck of our cabin. It cost us about 12 euro and was one of the best massages I have ever had.

The views from the cabins and restaurant are fantastic. After our jungle trek, we enjoyed our Beer Lao overlooking the river! Our guide on the trek was Joy - he was a great guide and great company.

Tip: bring a good repellent as the rooms have shutters and insects will get in
