“Near the Mekong”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 4 January 2012

Situated over the road from the Mekong and a long line of restaurants and places for "happy hour" (cocktails $3.20) the Sala Prabang consists of four villas separated by small shops. The villa we stayed in was up a side street opposite a small temple. Well appointed rooms with an excellent bathroom though lacking hanging space. Within walking distance of the centre of town and most attractions. Breakfast is served, weather permitting, over the road overlooking the river. Breakfast was fresh bread toasted over coals, omlettes, muesli, yoghurt, juice and coffee. Free internet was available in the lobby of the main villa. If you want to sleep in though make sure you are not in a room overlooking the Wat as the monks start banging on their drums at about 4am. A great choice.

Room Tip: Avoid rooms overlooking temple if you wish to sleep in.

“Clean and comfortable”

The Sala Prabang was a minimalistic but comfortable hotel. Aircon, ceiling fan, nice pillows and a computer in the downstairs foyer for your emails, we were staying around the corner from the main building but there was someone behind the desk 24/7 only too happy to get a bucket of ice ( no fridge ) to cool your drinks, or walk 50 mts to the bar/restaurant across the street and enjoy a cold beer $1.50 for the large Tiger or a $3 cocktail and watch the Mekong slide by. Breakfast in the out doors with views over the Mekong was a delight , simple but adequate and I agree the toaster was interesting so was the jam and eggs any way as long as they are an omelette. Overall we enjoyed the stay. We also traveled with Travel Indochina who were great and know the good cafes/restaurants just around the corner.Would recommend to anyone.

Room Tip: Upstairs had a small balcony

“Outstanding location”

Let's face it, location doesn't get better than that. The rooms are brand new and in traditional indochinese style. The staff is lovely and breakfast is served on a terrace overlooking the Mekong. I wouldn't want to stay anywhere else. Highly recommended

“At this price, what's not to like?”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 4 November 2011

I stayed here in October as part of a Travel Indochina tour of Lao and after getting accustomed to the local life, I'm very glad I stayed in this modest hotel rather than the more upmarket hotels charging 3 or 4 times the price!

Yes there's no TV and no in-room bar, but the whole country is still in recovery from the aerial bombardment from the USA and its allies, including Australia - so why should there be? Unless you're going to Lao for a stay in a luxury hotel room, save your money to spend on food and crafts etc to benefit the locals rather than international hotel chains.

I do have to agree though that it would be an advantage to have a couple of extra coat hangers - that's about my only criticism - apart from the paper thin walls that abound throughout the country.

Lovely country - lovely people - just go and let the less than luxury class accommodation be accepted for what it is.

Room Tip: Seems to be spread over 3 locations but all are close to everything and none seem to have views.

“Position Position”

Just across the road from the Mekong and the lovely restaurants that line its banks. The rooms are rather cell like but adequate and good value.

Room Tip: All rooms face the river which is good
