“Beautiful location, even though not very convenient, but hotel very mediocre”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed 26 January 2011

The setting is truly beautiful but the hotel is not well kept at all. The rooms are very essentials, bathrooms kind of old so is the swimming pool. Breakfast in the morning tends to be very chaotic as the hotel accomodates large group of tourists and the quality of food is average.
The hotel is situated 5/10 minutes by car from Luang Prabang's centre; there is a shuttle service every hour going back and forth.
Our experience has been alright overall but I just think there are much nicer hotels in the city centre!

“2 star hotel in a 5 star setting”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 7 January 2011

We got off to a bad start when our shuttle failed to materialize upon our airport arrival despite ample communication beforehand (ouch!). We did not get an answer at the hotel so we called the sister hotel in town, who promised a van in 15 minutes. More than an hour later, a van finally arrived, but the driver did not seem to be expecting us. We arrived after dark, but the receptionist was not concerned about the mishap, explaining matter of factly, "you were not on the list." However, he was holding our itinerary which had, in capital letters, the correct instructions to pick us up. When I pointed this out, he apologized for the mistake.

A number of other minor irritants - a painfully uncomfortable rollaway bed, a shower fixture that indeed detached from the wall (see other review below), a buffet breakfast that missed the mark - convinced us that the hotel was not well managed.

Too bad, because it is located in a spectacular, evocatively pastoral, setting. Rice paddies, water buffalo, ponds, streams, and elaborate foliage set the tone. The landscaping is well conceived, even the small stand of sticky rice growing near the restaurant. The rooms are large and casually elegant with balconies facing the beautiful scenery. We were sorry we missed the sunset! There is also a tennis court of very high quality, lending support to the "spa" in the title. A tour group occupied a number of rooms and we got the impression that some people come for extended stays.

We had supper outdoors on a very large veranda. The cuisine received mixed reviews from our group, but was served in a very lovely setting and accompanied by tasteful live music and a sample of traditional dancing by two young ladies.

With a bit more organization and friendlier staff, the hotel could really make a great impression.

Dear Yardley1,
Thank you for your review and thank for choosing Luang Prabang and Santi Resort & Spa as your preferred vacation destination.

With concern to the discomfort you have endured during your stay at Santi Resort & Spa:

Missed Airport Pick-up,
A horrible ordeal and it shouldn’t have happened as we monitoring all airport pick-ups and drop-off closely. Nevertheless this mishap is an inexcusable mistake.

Reception Staff,
Our staffs are all going through broad Guest Service training and we have another 3 months to go before it will be completed. But by now, basic Guest greeting and handling of Guest concerns should be in place. Apparently our front liners are not completely ready with the basics yet and this means we’ll have to intensify our training to achieve the ultimate objective which is Guest Satisfaction.

Breakfast,
We have improved our breakfast, but we still working on elevating it up to a superior level.

Shower fixture detached,
I haven’t had any report since October concerning shower fixtures which has been detached from the wall in our Guest-rooms as rooms in questions was shut down and errors have been rectified. But apparently we missed out on your room.

Uncomfortable roll-away bed,
Sadly the case is some of our roll-away beds are not of the usual high quality but they are being changed…slowly, as all General Managers I am bound by my budget.

To Yardley1 and to all of our past guests who have left disappointed, I am truly apologetic and I do hope you will consider staying with us again as next time around you will not encounter any discomfort of any kind.

Should you have any concerns and or questions, please feel free to contact me through email: gm@villasantihotel.com or through telephone: +856.71.253.470.

Thank you,

Sincerely,

Flemming Nielsen

“Very dissapointing despite lovely suroundings”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed 6 January 2011

The grounds were lovely but the service horrendous and the rooms mediocre and out of town so not convenient.
Our trip began with the hotel forgetting to pick us up and we waited 1 1/2 hours and called several times. When we arrived at the hotel the staff never apologized. The rooms were clean but depressing. The staff at the front desk barely spoke English. The internet never worked and pool closed!! they charged a fortune for an extra bed that was a wooden plank.
Later in our stay we were at the Bellerive which was an amazing hotel in Luang Prabang, stay there!!!

Dear Travelswithmag,
Thank you for your review and thank for choosing Luang Prabang and Santi Resort & Spa as your preferred vacation destination.

With concern to the distress you have endured during your stay at Santi Resort & Spa:

Missed Airport Pick-up,
An atrocious ordeal and it shouldn’t have happened as we monitoring all airport pick-ups and drop-off closely. Nevertheless this mishap leaves a bad impression with any Guest and is a bad start to any vacation. There is no excuse for this blunder.

Resort located out of town,
Resorts are in general not located in the city; we are located 10 to 12 minutes drive from downtown Luang Prabang. We have 6 departures from the Santi Resort & Spa as well as 11 departures to the Resort from Villa Santi Hotel in town.

Limited English Speaking Staff:
As in most properties in Indochina certain staffs are better in English than others so at times Guests can get a bit frustrated if they can’t be understood, which is absolutely understandable and for which I deeply apologize.

We have ongoing English programs for all of our employees but progress is regrettably slow.

Uncomfortable roll-away bed,
Some of our roll-away beds are not of the usual high quality but they are being changed one by one as soon as possible.

WIFI/Internet,
A month time ago we invested significant amount in WIFI system and we have high speed WIFI access points everywhere in the Resort, but unfortunately we are depending on Lao Telecom to provide a consistent steady signal. Again, please receive my apologies.

Pool Closed,
I believe you might have been staying with us during the Christmas holidays; it so happens that 97% of all of our Guests are from the western world, predominantly Europe. The Travel Agencies sending Guests to us have European Travel Agencies as partners and said Agencies have very strict regulations pertaining to Swimming Pool water’s ph value. The reason for the pool was closed for 3 days was to ensure we are complying with the high standards and expectations of our business partners.

To all of our past guests who have left disappointed, I am truly apologetic and I do hope you will consider staying with us again as next time around you will not encounter any discomfort of any kind.

Should you have any concerns and or questions, please feel free to contact me through email: gm@villasantihotel.com or through telephone: +856.71.253.470.

“Resort living in the rice paddies”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 21 November 2010

I have to admit that upon arrival my first impressions were not good but I quickly began to love this hotel. It's about ten minutes out of town, on a road which is partially gravel. There's some muddy-looking water features on the property which seemed like mosquito breeding grounds. But... The location is very authentic. Farmers grow rice right on the property, the sunsets are beautiful and once I realized that the concept of this hotel was to place it on an authentic rural rice paddy setting I loved it. No mosquito problem at all, it turns out. The views from the rooms are spectacular - fields, distant mountains, and the occasional water buffalo ambling by. Spotlessly clean rooms with teak wood floors, comfortable beds with crisp white sheets, and ice cold AC. Very good restaurant offers cooking classes. Nice pool and pool-side bar to relax by at the end of a long day. There is a free shuttle van between the resort and their sister hotel in town. The ride really isn't that bad at all - although I do recommend staying in town at least one night. There was something very relaxing about retreating to the quiet serenity of the rice paddies after dinner! In the end, I really like this place.
