“Great Place”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 13 February 2012

I stayed in this hotel last year and it is a great place to stay in Luang Prabang, although in fairness to the other hotels and villas, they all seemed very good and it is Luang Prabang itself that is so remarkable. If you've not been then go now! A friend has been twice, first time twenty years ago and then recently, and she says things have changed so much. There used to be a handful of hotels and many private homes, now every home has been turned into an hotel. I hope this wealth and business has trickled through to the locals.

Luang Prabang is tiny and you can walk from one side to the other in no time at all. It's a great place and just wandering around the (43) temples, many next to each other, all within a very manageable walking distance, is a joy. Watch out for the novice monks in internet cafes or playing football in their private time. Sit and have a drink in one of the cafes and the wander some more.

In the morning observe the monks take alms - I saw one tourist stand in front of a monk blocking his way, in order to get a good picture - invasive and rude. No wonder I read a story saying that some abbots have stopped taking his monks out in this very traditional way. A real shame and tourism at its worst. It is a wonderful thing to see, a 100 or even 200 monks and novices (some so young), walking in a line with their alms basket to one side and people humbly offering small food stuffs for blessings. Observe, or even kneel if you can and offer food, but don't stand in front of them as though they are there solely as a tourist attraction.

Try and arrive by river from North Thailand. It is very special when having spent two days on the Mekong, you arrive at the exquisite jewel that is Luang Prabang.

Room Tip: I'm not sure if any of the rooms come withOUT a view but request a river view just in case.

“The Best Hotel in Laos, for us”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 12 February 2012

We stayed in this hotel for four nights in January of 2012. Little did we realize at the time that this beautiful hotel would prove to be the highlight of our accommodations in Laos.
The rooms in the hotel are extremely spacious and comfortable with the taste of tradition and traditional luxury. The air conditioning is extremely efficient, which is important, given the hot climate of the country. Most of the rooms overlook the Mekong River which is a hive of activity from morning until night.
The staff in the hotel is extremely efficient and caring. While some staff members struggled intermittently with the language, they were quick to find someone to satisfy our requirements. The hotel provided laundry facilities which proved very useful to us and while possibly the service was not the least expensive in Luang Prabang, the cost was reasonable and service prompt.
Our breakfast was included in the price of our room and was served on a patio across the street overlooking the river. There was an abundance of choices including cereals, breads, fruits and eggs made to order. The staff was extremely pleasant and the service was excellent.
Mr. Urban Paulsson the owner of the hotel was extremely helpful and knowledgeable about the town. Upon arrival, he welcomed us warmly and provided us with an annotated map showing the highlights of the town as well as recommendations of places to eat and visit. We felt bad that we had arranged a tour for our entire stay there and were unable to take advantage of his recommendations. In addition to providing us with information and recommendations about the town, he also graciously hosted a wine reception for all of the guests nightly. We had an opportunity to meet other people visiting Luang Prabang and exchanged stories and experiences, before going out to dinner.
One small reservation that we had about the hotel was that it did not permit long showers because of a shortage of hot water. However, once we realized this minor shortcoming and limited the time we spent in the shower, we enjoyed our stay in this hotel extremely and would not hesitate in recommending it to others.

“Can't say enough good things about Mekong Riverview”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 11 February 2012

We absolutely loved this hotel - we spent four nights here in November and didn't want to leave. The staff were 100% genuine and helpful, Daniel the manager made some great (honest) restaurant recommendations and we also met the owner who told us about the history of the hotel over a glass of wine.

Luang Prabang is a beautiful place, just to amble around - we also visited the big waterfall...and climbed up to the top, which to be honest was not worth it as there was no rewarding view for all of the hard work!

The little touches - such as tea and cake in the afternoon really made this hotel for me - and I'm definitely planning on coming back!

Room Tip: Choose a room on the first floor facing the river of course!

“Relaxing, calm with a view to die for”

By far the best hotel we stayed at on our recent tour of Laos. The owner, Urban, personally greets new guests and briefs them on the town. The staff are tremendously helpful. The excellent breakfasts are taken overlooking the river. We stayed there twice and have not regretted it.

“Special experience”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 3 February 2012

My son and I stayed here for six nights in December. The view from our room was tranquil and beautiful and the attention to detail and comfort was fantastic. Yes, it was the most expensive place we stayed but well worth it for the level of relaxation and calm. Many of the things you are constantly dipping into your pocket for everywhere else were free here, which makes the whole experience much more relaxing.
