The Thiri Myaing Hotel (also known as the Candacraig -- made famous in Theroux's Great Railway Bazaar) is located on the outskirts of Pyin Oo Lwin (still known by many as Maymyo) about a 2 hour's drive outside of Mandalay.
Picturesque from the outside, the rooms and service of the hotel are extremely minimal. Our first room only had one very dim overhead light in a massive room. When we asked we were given a second room it had more working lights but the water drained across (a quite large) bathroom from the shower, past the sink and toilet into a drain. I've stayed in my share of small guesthouses, government owned Soviet or Chinese hotels but I found the high expectations of an old British residence made me quite disappointed.
There is very little to recommend about this hotel. It is located a 20 minute walk from downtown (which given the lack of electricity in most of the city after dark makes for a rather dicey walk home in the evening since there is no restaurant in the hotel), the bath makes a shower a very difficult affair with little water pressure, the television only has one channel (the state-owned channel), and the rooms were unfortunately renovated in the 1980s ruining the charm while making it appear very out-dated.
