“Very cozy hotel in Mandalay”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 10 December 2011

I stayed in this hotel 1 night for usd 25. This location is near King's palase and not far from Mandalay hill. Not free water, not waters in the fridge, not hot water, not buffet breakfast (only omelett and coffee or tea), not wi-fi (only computer) but somehow this hotel was very cozy hotel in Mandalay. But the price can be lower for value.

“Hopefully the last time I'll ever sleep with transparent mildew”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed 2 September 2011

Perhaps I got a bad room, perhaps I just got unlucky, perhaps I should've just asked for another room, but in any case this was the first terrible night of sleep I've had in my past year in Myanmar.
The reception's warm enough, the front desk people are good at what they do and they know how to receive foreigners quickly and get you to your room fast. But the rooms are victims of the clammy climate, patchwork TLC, and evident lack of any refurbishments since the hotel was opened.
The pillow, the sheets, the comforter, and even the carpet.... all smelt of poignant mildew. I took a shower in the middle of the night, went back to bed, and then woke up to rush to our car outside (showerless). Low and behold, when I arrived to Yangon 5 hours later, my wife smelt the mildew on my skin and in my hair before I had a chance to hark back at the night of fungal fury.
If they burn the sheets, bomb the pillows, rip up the carpets and bleach the bathrooms for good fun, then I'd likely come back because: the roof top eating area was a nice touch, the staff were on their game, and the location's prime. Until then though, I can't be a fan of this fury.

“Good hotel”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 10 August 2011

We went there last july and had a triple room on the 5th floor.
Very clean hotel, with truly nice and smiling people at the reception and elsewhere. Rooms, no thrill, but for Myanmar, in rather good condition : everything is clean, no bad smell, not to noisy because, and it's really clever, they have the staircase and lift on front of the hotel, where the street is.
Good breakfast in a very clean and warmly decorated restaurant (only for breakfast), and good service with an everlasting smile...
One of the girls at the reception liked to joke a bit about my remark that Asia is noisy everywhere, laughing all the time, like she would do with some good friends. Very pleasant when a good hotel can be linked to a good human relationship.
Just a blog away, you'll find a not too cheap restaurant with european food and 2 blocks futher the two-two restaurant with burmese food. Take care there, seafood is overpriced (1 single prawn with sauce for about 3 Euros). But no problem, their food is safe.

We paid 35 USD per night for a triple room, and it's a good deal.
Go there, and enjoy your stay.

“Great hotel, great staff, great location”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 4 August 2011

I paid $25 a night for a 4 night stay. The room was modern, spacious, very clean, and the a/c and other facilities worked well. This hotel has a lift. There is a lovely roof top terrace where you can have breakfast or just enjoy the 180 degree views of Mandalay. Breakfast is adequate - the usual eggs, toast, and drinks - but could be a little more varied given the price of the room. The staff are very friendly and helpful, speak reasonable English, and they were very happy to book my onward bus trip and hotel for no commission. You can rent a motorbike or bicycles here. They are not in great condition compared to Vietnam but then I checked out others and they were no better. I went on a 140km ride on the hotel's motorbike and it worked ok so it couldn't have been too bad. Two internet computers are available but they are slow (normal in Burma) and you do have to pay to use them. I would definitely recommend this hotel.

“Friendly and quaint lodge”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 20 June 2011

When we first arrived at Royal City Hotel, there were no available rooms. We reserved a room for 2 nights later without any deposit paid. Yet the service staff was pleasant and helped us to secure flight tickets to Bagan.

We loved the room we eventually stayed in. It is quaint, roomy and airy. Though features are old, they are in working condition, clean and added character to the place.

We skipped breakfasts at the hotel, choosing the noodle-stall at the junction further down the road. In addition to minced-meat noodles, there were also a variety of fritters and tea served at this street-side stall. We absolutely loved having breakfast with the locals.
