We travelled in a group of three couples, two of the couples having been to Sousse and Hammemet before and could not speak highly enough of their previous holiday experiences there. One couple (myself and my wife) are retired hoteliers/publicans, and all of us are widely travelled, taking 2 or 3 foreign holidays per year. We (rather stupidly)
only read the Tripadvisor reviews a few days before the holiday and took them with a pinch of salt as we tend to believe that it is mainly complainants who use these sites and many of them exaggerate - how wrong we were !
On arrival, one room had no towels, one hadn't been cleaned and the third had no hot water - the towels arrived after three times of asking, the second room was cleaned in about one hour (fair enough) and the third had it's hot water restored after FIVE days. It was not possible to phone reception from any of the rooms as none of the telephones were working.
We were told on the Sunday (our arrival day) that the table for six we used on the first day would be reserved for us for the rest of the holiday; however, when we went for our evening meal on the following day we found it already in use. On explaining the situation, the waiter said he would find us another table for that evening. We were then flabbergasted to see him pushing an empty table for four up against an occupied table for two and asking the diners to move; we insisted that they should not change tables and I then asked to see the manager as I already had other complaints (see later) - his solution was to push two small round tables together and arrange six chairs around them. Upon this, my wife and I walked out and left our friends to dine in some degree of comfort. The other complaints I made to the manager were completely ignored as to any sort of explanation or apology.
The other complaints I made were about the rooms on our arrival (see above); the fact that there was a shortage of glasses and we had to drink from small plastic beakers; that when glasses were returned to the bar they were only hand rinsed and not washed properly and then used immediately ; and that when the bar staff served drinks they did so with their hands holding the lips of the glasses or beakers, which is extremely unhygenic.
I note that other reviewers have complained about the behaviour of the Russians or Eastern Europeans in the restaurant, and our experience was that they were rude and pushed in and piled their plates (often several at a time) high and then didn't eat all of it and subsequently huge amounts of food were thrown away.
The menu was extremely bland and repetitive, and there just wasn't enough of it, probably because the Russians had got there first ! We ate out on several occasions just to get away from the place; something you should not need to do on an all-inclusive holiday. The meals we had out were great.
The seating area in front of the all-inclusive bar consisted of only six grubby easy chairs and five small coffee-type tables it looked as though a furniture clearance sale had just taken place. There was a lounge area (for want of a better description) around the corner from the bar but this was always invaded by locals even though it was clearly as being for all-inclusive guests. In this area the furniture was also grubby and tatty.
The purpose of the locals' presence seemed to be to try to pick up any apparently single females who were staying in the hotel; this also appeared the main interest of most of the waiters, bar staff and animation team, rather than concentrating on their jobs.
There also seemed to be a number of prostitutes, both local and hotel guests, hanging around the bar areas in order to ply their trade, and this cannot possibly have gone unnoticed by the management.
I won't say too much about the famous Ali Baba because after a couple of days pestering and some strong exchanges of words, he avoided us for the rest of the week. However, not everyone has it in their make-up to do this in the face of his intimidatory approach, especially a couple on their own - fortunately, there were six of us.
Finally, I think that the most telling remark of the week was 'the other hotels have concierges whereas we've got bouncers' - there were always pairs of largish men dressed in black on the hotel entrance.
