“cheap christmas and new year break in order to visit friends and share their celebration”

We booked the Hotel Jinene at the last minute with Thomas Cook and ended up staying at the Royal Jinene. The rep told me that most people are "upgraded" when they arrive.
We arrived in the evening and there was NO MEAL provide despite the fact that this was supposedly included with the package book. This was dissappointing as we were travelling with a young child who needed to be fed. Normally, having worked in the travel industry, one might expect at least a cold salad to be served up if guests are going to be checking in late. We were not delayed or anything and so the hotel could have easily predicted our arrival time - given that it was a package holiday. No apology was given or options offered and none of the buffet restaurants were opened at our arrival time. It was only 9.30 at night. We have travelled to Tunisia before and arrived after the restaurant closed. A late evening meal was provided to us.

Our room was lovely and spacious and we were allocated a sea view room on the third floor. It was lovely. We had all expected facilities and took our own kettle as we knew that this would not be provided. There was hairdryer in the bathroom and the bathroom and toilet facilities were separate. I thought that they could have installed a small hand basin in the WC so that you could also wash your hands and not interupt if someone was using the shower or bath. The bathroom was pretty big.

There were three of us in the room and yet throughout the holiday we were only ever provided with two sets of towels. I assume that they thought my daughter should just reuse one of the adults towels?

There was a TV in the room and luckily for us, we have studied French as there were no channels in English except for BBC world - which shows mostly news. There are most of the French channels and there are also a few in German.

The reception staff were not great at providing local information and suggested catching a taxi every time we asked how to get somewhere. They had no maps or local information that they were willing to share with us. On the other hand, the kids club and animation team were great and spoke a very high standard of English and were willing to help out at any time. My little girl had a ball at kid´s club and still asks if she can go to kid´s club even though we are now back home. LADIES - BE VERY WARY OF THE NIGHT RECEPTIONIST. I had him try to come on to me when I arrived late one night (sober and well dressed) with my little girl hand in hand with me. He wanted to know where my "husband" was and tried it on. Early the next morning he also followed me into the dining area and wanted to "chat" DISGUSTING. I reported this incident to the rep and the manager as it was obvious he had tried this with someone before and gotten away with it. The manager offered his apologies and later the sleazebag did too. I got the impression that apologies were only forthcoming as the rep was informed and as I had his image stored on my digital camera and made a big fuss about the whole affair.

The animation was the same for 2 weeks running. Normally hotels change the program around every two weeks as many people stay for a fortnight. By the second week we didn´t bother even going down to the evening entertainment as we had seen it before. On only two nights the hotel offered entertainment from outside. The team seemed to be trying their best, but after the kid´s mini disco was over - it just wasn´t worth hanging around as we would have probably died with boredom!

The food was good at this hotel, except for one night when they only offered Tunisian dishes. I have a very fussy three year old and the chef bent over backwards to offer her something to eat if she wouldn´t eat from the buffet. I was however VERY VERY DISSAPOINTED with the gala meals offered to us over Christmas and new year. The hotel doesn´t offer a choice and they offer a set menu served over several hours. The menu included fish and meat for most courses and there was no kids choices or a vegetarian option. I ASKED FOUR PEOPLE - the rep included.. to try and sort me out a veggie meal and something for me little girl.. nothing fancy.. but at least maybe one course we could eat!! The manager then asked me WHY (at the actual gala meal) I hadn´t sorted it out beforehand. I had to call him over and explain that I couldn´t eat the meal they were serving up to me and my little girl just wouldn´t even look twice at it. Eventually I received an ommlette, two Breton style pancakes (with savoury food tucked inside) and my little girl had a plate of spaghetti. The chef was a big flirt with all the ladies - but it was all just a joke and he always had a kind word for everyone - in various languages - and seemed to enjoy getting to know the guests. There is little room in the dining room and people were continually having to get up and move to let other guests in and out. Each group had an allocated table for the whole holiday - but often you arrived in the dining room to find no cutlery as other guests had "borrowed" it. Also, when the waiters came to take away dirty dishes - they also took the cutlery so you were left with none for the next course - as it was never replaced. Some days no place was set for my little girl as my menu card on our table stated 2 plus 1.

The drink is double the price in the hotel compared with the irish bar 5 mins walk away. If you intend to drink a lot then upgrade tò all inclusive!

The swimming pool was great (the indoor one as it was too cold to use the one outdoors) the only problem was that there was no lifeguard and many guests used the access door to the swimming pool to run in and out from the hotel grounds. This meant the surrounding pool area probably wasn´t as hygenic as it should have been as they had shoes on. Cold air also rushed in and cooled the pool area down. The showers at the pool area are fab so you don´t need to rush up to your room to wash your hair. they are enclosed cubicles and have a shower curtain for privacy.

To get into sousse - it takes about 30 mins to walk and to kantoui (the main resort) it takes about 20-30 mins. The bus isn´t expensive - about 20pence per adult and half price for kids. it is SUPPOSED to run every 20 mins and is the number 12 or number 12-18. you can catch the bus back to the hotel from sousse just outside the medina - at the bus station. the same bus takes you to PEK.

If you want to go online - it costs 5 dinars for a half hour at the hotel but the price is much lower in town. shop around if you plan to check out your facebook page and emails. it is also much more expensive to call from the hotel as it is to call from one of the many "taxi phone" shops.

Brushing up on your french before travelling to tunisia will help you get around a whole lot easier and help bargain for cheaper taxi fares and souvenirs!

“Good Value Half Board in Sousse”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 29 December 2011

We stayed just after the shutdown for the revolution, we had booked the Jinene but were put in the Royal Jinene because there were only a handful of guests. The room was large and pleasant with a balcony, the toilet is in a separate room from the sink/bath/shower, the TV only had one channel in English (BBC News) but some of the Arabic channels have English films with Arabic subtitles rather than dubbing. The food was excellent, lots of selection but no bacon, pork etc. The indoor pool is large, well heated and excellent, the outdoor pool looks nice but it was not warm enough to try. The hotel is close to the beach but on the outskirts of Sousse, about 4km north of the centre of Sousse and about 4km south of Port El Kantaoui. About 500m north on the main road is a Monoprix supermarket which has a good selection but no alcohol. To save on transfers, if you are flying to Enfidha Airport there is a Societe de Transporte du Sahel bus every 90 minutes into Sousse that goes by the Jinene; if you are flying into Monastir Airport there is a train right outside the airport (walk through the parking lot) every 30 to 60 minutes to Sousse Bab Jedid (TD 0.800), walk 500m north to the main circle (with the tourist office and main entrance to the Medina) and take bus 12/18 (the destination signs are all in Arabic apart from the number, you board at the rear and leave from the front) (TD 0.430) which goes by the Jinene.

“The Best!!”

This was my first solo travel abroad however I would advice every tourist not to dress too touristy and try to blend in with the locals if you want to avoid attention from beggers or perhaps local merchants. Anyways, the hotel was great! I have ralised that there are many bad comments abotu this hotel however it seems they have overcome that and it is moving in the right direction. The facilities are excellent and the food is perfect with a variety of selections. It is quiet a distance from Sousse centre and Medina, too Medina it is about an hour with a cool walk or 30 minutes if you are a fast walker, Sousse centre is 15-30 minutes. Taxi ride from the Hotel to Medina is 5 TND make sure you bargan with the taxi driver if you would like it cheaper.

“Worst place I have stayed in ever! Fawlty Towers on steroids”
1 of 5 stars Reviewed 22 September 2011

I have thought about writing this review for a while and finally decided I should. Wish I didn't even have to rate it. It was like Fawlty Towers on steroids and would have been funny if we were not on the receiving end! From the moment we tried to check in to the moment we left, it was just plain awful and we were not welcome at all. I think they maybe thought we were American? Nothing royal about this place.
There was this mystical manager (who never appeared) that the staff had to pass every minor decision through. Talk about disempowered staff! When we arrived quite tired the smarmy reception man informed us there was no booking for us and refused to let us telephone the booking company to sort out.
Over the next few days as we tried to sort out reimbursement from the booking company (Expedia- who the staff claimed they had never heard of) the reception guy constantly was rude to us and taunted us saying "See there is no problem".
Every time we went and sat in the dining room, staff rudely pushed us to another table as they had some bizarre seating arrangement that they would not share with us (even though no one would come and sit at the table we originally sat at).
To top of a horrible stay, I checked three times with many staff about my laundry and gave them 3 days to it in. When we went to check out, they turned up with my laundry still dirty and not even folded and said sorry. But they seemed happy that my laundry was still dirty.
I don't think their rude behaviour was lost in translation as my father was with us and he was born in Tunisia.
I do not recommend anyone stay at this place as it tainted our whole view of Tunisia and we will never go back there.
But having said all this...the Europeans, including the British seemed to love it here!? Having read other reviews it seems like people stayed in a completely different hotel.

“Fabulous first couple holiday!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 20 September 2011

This was me and my boyfriends first holiday abroad together. As he has family in Sousee, this was one of the cheapest hotels we could find in the area close enough for us to go and visit them.

We got to the hotel at 3.30 am and a porter took our bags and lead us to our room. It was very large and clean. Bathroom was large with a bath and shower over to it. Toilet was separate. Beds were comfy. 2 twins as they don’t do double beds in a lot of the hotels there. We also had a balcony which overlooked the pool and the the side you could see the sea. It wasn’t until the morning that we realised the hotel manager (who is good friends with my boyfriends dad) had upgraded us from The Jinene to The Royal Jinene. He also helped us out with other little things like giving us a Tunisian sim card to save on phone bills and paid for our lunch a few times at the hotel.

BREAKFAST- there was a wide choice of breads, croissants, pan au chocolat, eggs and turkey sausages. There was also (unusual for breakfast) an array of salads. They also did fruits, melon, grapes and the chef cooked pancakes in front of you and eggs how you asked.
LUNCH- we mostly ate lunch at the hotel. We were half board and so had to pay for our lunches which was very cheap! A pizza was 6 dinar which is less than £3.00. Bottled drinks, fanta, coke, lemonade and large bottles of water were all 2 dinar which is about 80p.
DINNER- mixture of different meats every night, turkey, chicken, veal, lamb, fish, potatos, couscous, mixture of different salads. The 2 chefs would also be out cooking something for people in front of them each night too. Always something different like steaks, veal in wine sauce, chicken stew, fish,. Pudding was ice cream, water melon, cakes, mousse. Drinks weren’t provided at dinner time but the water would come and take your order. I had half a bottle of rose most night which was 7 dinar. Less than £3.50.

The pool wasn’t very busy. Also able to get a sunbed and table. There was a Lifeguard at the pool which enjoyed pushing people in when they weren’t looking! 4 workers who entertained the kids with darts, golf. They also did a daily aqua aerobics class on often took people out to the beach to play volleyball.

ACTIVITIES- We went quad biking which was fun but ended up in my boyfriend being driven to a doctors house to have stitches without and anaesthetic! His breaks packed in as we were going down a steep hill! We went on banana boats, fly fish , jet skis and had a great time. If you are planning on doing water sports try to go with the same people each time as they do recognise you and give you cheaper prices! The water park (Aqua Palace) is a 5 dinar taxi drive away. It cost 20 dinars to get in and 2 for a locker. There are lots of slides and a big waves pool. There are also sun beds and places to eat there too. All very cheap. Fair ground at Port El Kantaoui. Free to get in. You have to buy tickets with are 1 dinar each. Each ride requires a different amount of tickets. E.g. The main roller coaster cost 7 tickets. There are also some very nice shops there too, also plenty of places to eat and drink.

Medina- We got a taxi from outside the hotel to the Medina (5 DINAR). It is very nice. Little market shops. Everyone tries to get you into their shop but its all part of the fun. The further you go in the seedier it gets however so beware!

Taxis- driving around everywhere. Make sure you agree on a price before you get in. We paid no more than 6 dinar to the Medina in Sousee or to Port El Kantoui. After 9 o’clock they say its price and a half but still after 9 it was never more than 7 dinar.

The beach which is a 2 minute walk down a path from the hotel is very clean. It has sun loungers all the way up for use free of charge. We thought it would be nice to go for a swim at night time but quickly changed our minds when the jelly fish decided to attack us. Weren’t dangerous ones. Just made us a bit itchy for a few minutes.

The hotel has a VIP area which does massages, manicures and has a small gym. This seemed very expensive. The gym had 5 pieces of equipment and was 20 dinar to use for the day. A 10 minute walk down to beach to the Marhaba and there was a gym there everyone is able to use. It was a lot bigger and only 5 dinar. They also have a nice indoor pool which is open to everyone. Not just the hotel guests.

We would definitely come back to this hotel. All the staff are helpful and make you feel very welcome. The area we were in had everything we were looking for and at a perfect price for us. We really recommend it.

Room Tip: We didnt know till towards the end of our stay that the Royal Jinene have suites. We were shown one...
