“A decadent palace”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 6 January 2012

I have very mixed feelings about this hotel "5 star palace". We booked it online as it looked quite beautiful from the images but also conveniently located (10 min walk to the library). Prior to our arrival we called the hotel but they did not know about our reservation. We finally arrived and we had a fast check-in. Our room was enormous and quite old-style with nice matress and pillows, not the cleanest room I have been but quite decent. Spending time in the room would have been great if the heating worked. Our luggage did not arrive with us so I did not have any additional clothes to hang out in Alexandria. It was really cold these days and unfortunately I felt colder inside the room. We asked at the reception for the heating but the staff did not really make any effort to make it work. The hotel staff in general was quite inexperienced. We also asked them to make some follow up with the airport for our missing luggage, eventually we had to call from our phones to find out that our luggage had arrived. Then we had to go to the 50km airport to take them back and forth. We asked the reception for a car service and the concierge arranged the filthiest oldest cab in the city. The cab drive to and from the airport was a nightmare. It was the most dangerous car ride I had in my life. It was quite shameful this 5star hotel does not arrange a good car service for it's guests. I became really sick after this ordeal.
We complained a bit about this and then the next cab driver was really decent.

Breakfast was very nice with nice views of the sea. The only annoying thing was that there was loud dance music at 8am but after.

At the end all I can say this hotel has a nice vibe, if the staff would make some more effort and maybe if it was not so overpriced I would give it an very good review.

Room Tip: Call before you arrive. Ask for a decent car service. Ask for anything in advance. Be pushy with the...

“Do not stay here!”

We had booked two rooms via Octopus travel agency and arrived early afternoon to be told that our rooms were not ready. We patiently waited, despite nothing suggesting anyone was actually preparing our rooms. After enquiring numerous times and being appeased that they will be ready soon, we became suspicious after we witnessed many other groups arriving and being shown to their rooms. It transpired after polite negotiation with the manager that our booking had not been processed and that the hotel did not have any rooms for us. The manager claimed that he had not received our booking through the travel agent, nor our payment for the rooms. We had our receipt proving we had already paid the travel agent and even spoke to the agency whilst at the hotel who were adamant that the hotel had received the monies.

We wasted a lot of time trying to negotiate with the manager, who became irate and did not understand our disappointment at all. Finally we were offered a room in a sister hotel 30 minutes in a taxi outside the city. We unhappily had no choice to accept being re-located to this shoddy resort (that is a whole separate review!).

Although there is no argument that this hotel looks the piece for a colonial-type experience and decor along with great location, you could be severely disappointed that your booking is not honoured by receptionists and a manager who will not tell you the truth. Well, this is Eygpt after all.

“Pure class”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 5 November 2011

Something about that hotel made me fell in love with it , the minute you walk in you feel this will not be your ordinary hotel , pure class every where , in the sitting area near the front desk , sea of marble and ceiling paintings , the room was huge , when i got to the room i found complementary fruit platter and cookies platter , nice touch , the bed was very comfy , A/C , LCD TV , free WIFI , bathroom was spotless , breakfast was great with lots to choose from , and the best part about the restaurant on the 6th floor was the view , just out of this world , sometimes you like the hotel you stay in , and sometimes you fall in love with it :)

Room Tip: Rooms on the side of the building , you get partial sea view , but less noise from the street

“Disappointing to disaster”
1 of 5 stars Reviewed 4 November 2011

I do not know where to start actually...If the 4 star is a joke, than I have definitely not tasted it.
It should actually be closed for a full renovation, while they say that was recently refurbished.
Getting to the reception, I had the unpleasant surprise to find out that my reservation was not made. However they had some available rooms and I finally got one.
Starting with the reception, they put me to pay twice, as the receptionist had no clue on how to use a POS device.
Going to the room, the ambiance was ok for an old hotel, but not even close to 25 sqm though, as advertised on some websites, for a standard double room.
Now going to the disaster part, the room was having a "nice" smell of cat pee, combined with some old people house. Finally changed the room as I could not survive and got in the second one with an unidentified smell, which definately was not nice in the bathroom. I can stand this smell, so I just gave up.... :)
As a conclusion this is by far the worst hotel I have ever been to in Egypt, bearing in mind that I am leaving here for the past two years, and I've made a bit of travel.
Cheers all, and think twice when you book a hotel in Egypt even if recommended by someone.

Room Tip: Think twice.

“Elegance of the past, tries but misses the mark.”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 30 October 2011

Windsor Palace Hotel is one of several located along the coast where the strong winds make me want to be away from the winds. Inside lobby is quite decorative, we were greeted with Hibiscus cold refreshing welcome drinks. Old cage, double glass door elevators look quaint but soon proved to be more trouble holding open two swinging doors while entering or exiting, especially with luggage fighting with its doors. The complimentary wifi failed to connect on their primary strongest signal, but was able to connect on a weaker, secondary signal. The light in the bathroom appeared very dim when first turned on but does get slightly brighter over time. The shower water pressure was anemic, barely functional. Mini-fridge and air conditioner in room worked adequately.

We felt somewhat uncomfortable seeing a stranger staring at us when we arrived on our floor one time, not knowing if they were staff security.

The buffet breakfast on the rooftop with a view was nice, rather windy outside, so most chose to stay inside.

Checkout is 12 noon, we asked for a 1500 hours late check out with the manager and was permitted so we could have a chance to visit Bibliotheca Alexandrina, ride their streetcar tram, return to shower, then catch taxi for EGP 10 to a train station back to Cairo.
