Alexandria is spread along several miles of coastline, so although the hotel is on the sea front, it is some way from the main attractions. However, the ubiquitous yellow and black Lada taxis and crowded minibuses are plentiful and reasonably priced. The hotel concierge was very helpful in getting taxis for us. Local drivers like to stay with you for the day, so you can get a price for this. We preferred getting a taxi to the centre, exploring the antiquities by foot, then negotiating with a taxi driver to return. Taxi drivers, cafe staff and shop staff rarely have any English and our Arabic was non-existent, so this was interesting. The hotel was quiet - the tourist trade is suffering from the political upheaval, but we felt very safe here. After Cairo, this City was a hidden gem, with no hassle which made it fun to explore the City, the seafront, and the lively and interesting markets in streets close by the hotel.
We received a warm welcome and were upgraded to a suite which was comfortable and well equipped. Our suite had a city view which was interesting, and all restaurants and bars overlook the Med, which made breakfast a treat. There is a good range of restaurants on offer in the hotel. Whilst the young women on reception were more interested in their fingernails than our needs, and were supremely indifferent to resolving a leak behind the loo, or sorting out a charging error, all other staff in bars and restaurants, and the maid service, were excellent. There is a private beach in front of the hotel (across the busy road) which is clean and well supervised. Generally the beaches are full of rubbish, so a private beach becomes the only way to enjoy the sea.
Overall we enjoyed our stay at the Maritim and would recommend it for easy luxury.
