“a beautiful location and nice atmosfeer”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 13 September 2011

I am Belgian and traveled to club med smir for a week end August. our bungalow was very close to everything (too close - the disco noise at night was a big minus for us!) - it faced the grass surrounding the swimming pool on one side and the beach on the other side. The practicallity of it made us like it anyway! I loved the beach (beautiful natural spot!), the sea and the usual good things about a club med - we played tennis (had lessons every morning), I went to fitness classes and streching and got some time with the kids and some time off while the little one was having fun at the mini-club. I personally don't like the club-style animation that much (tagadoudoudou) but my teenage girl liked having that... the shows were ok but not great. The GOs were generally nice but much nicer after the end of Ramadan for many of them... I have personally no complain to share about the bungalows - they were just perfect for us - they were not renovated but fine - the shower worked well, the bed was comfortable and the cupboards sufficient to hang all our clothes with enough hangers and all of it perfectly cleaned every day by a very nice and smiling cleaning lady... If you add colourful curtains and bedspread to give it a vacation-like atmosfeer, it's all we needed!... I am the type to be so happy with a hut as long as it lays on a beautiful beach (and the beach really was beautiful!).
now the big minus is that I got sick (gastro) and got stucked in bed for nearly two days and waq not the only one there with that problem - and everybody there told me that they thought that the buffet was not up to the usual "club med" standards in terms of quality and choice. also the service was nice but clearly not enough personnel - tables on the terrace were never cleaned when we arrived and stayed there for long long times without being cleaned - we had to go inside, find a waiter and ask specifically to come out and clean it for us if we wanted to eat outside (and of course you want to eat on the terrace with such a beautiful view)
There were lots of discussion of the permanent closing of club Med smir after September 15 when we were there - it seems like the grounds belong to the king of Morocco and is leased to club med only until 2014 and this is why they can't start heavy renovation as the king wants the grounds back at the end of the lease anyway. so each year they talk about closing as it is not up to club med standards anymore... I would find it sad - club med seems to be closing all the 3 tridents places - when people complain about the value, they shouldn't forget that all the 4 tridents are even much more expensive (personally I prefer to pay less for less comfort as long a I have the sport, the fun and the beautiful location)

“I will return.....”

Sincerely I don't understand the most part of bad reviews. I returned saturday from aq very good stay at SMIR and from the arrival to the departure I must say that I only have good memories. A nice beach, perahps it will be nice to have a beach bar, a good swimmingpool where everybody can be, babys, juniors and seniors, good activities. The rooms must clearly be updated but everything was clean. The GO Team was superbe and even when the work provides from a team work there are a soul and that soul is Mr. Marco, thank you for every good moments I spent with you and your team. Even SMIR it's a 3 trident, people that work there is 5 or 10 Trident. All the rest it's like the good reviews said, A word to Silvye from reception and to Mr. Cheik from "tire à l'arc.".thank you.

“Bye bye good old memories ...”

First I would like to mention that I'm a Belgian and that I apologize for any mistakes made during this resume. After 2 years of 'renting a house in France' kind of holiday, we were looking forward to another Club Med holiday. I've known the Club for more than 20 years and I must say: this was my most disappointing expercience. We travelled with a 3-year old boy and a 7-year old girl. We arrived after a flight with Royal Air Maroc. First minus: you can hardly say that this was more than a beast wagon. Dirty chairs, flight delayed and I won't even mention the stench. Thankfully the flight to Tanger wasn't fully booked so we had enough space for the 4 of us. Sylvie (Reception GO) was awaiting us at the airport and accompanied us to the Club. After a 2h drive we arrived and we were welcomed by approximately 20 GO's to show us the way to our bungalow. Considering the late hour this was a plus ! We booked a bungalow with beach view as our little one still needs to take a nap in the afternoon. Unfortunately we were to reside in the bungalows that were located in the far end of the club (Sahara area, 950's). And when I say far, I mean far ... A 15 minutes walk to have breakfast is OK, but better not forget suncream or towels ! The bungalows were spacious enough for the 4 of us but an enormous lack of comfort. This Club definately needs a large refresh: old-fashioned en basic. BTW: my husband thought he saw a cockroach running off as we entered the bungalow ... Luckily it was only a 1 time visit (we guess). The pool is indeed too small for the number of GO's. Other minus for us: the kids could not stand in the pool which forced us to go to the pool at the Mini-club. Kids thought it was fun, we didn't as we had to sit on 1 chair (only when the life guard was absent) and one small wooden table ... So far for holiday comfort ...
Indeed, we also felt like there was a lack of personnel. The tables and chairs were sticky, as well in the main restaurant as at the pool. Other minus: as we were located so far from all the activities we did not always have the courage (read: time) to use the lavatory in our room. 2 toilets per gender at the pool and idem at the main restaurant. You can imagine that this is very little for the number of GM's staying at the resort.
BIG PLUS: the beach is exceptionally nice, fine sand and slightly going down. For the kidsas well as for us: great !
I can truly say that having experienced quite some villages at Club Med together with my parents as a kid and as a teenager, this holiday was a disappointment. For the price we paid, I'm sure we could have had a 5 star hotel.
And what bothered us even most was the attitude of 70% of the GM's. I've read other reviews and I must say: local staff was extremely helpfull and friendly. But I guess that when you treat a person like [---], they might as well treat you the same way ! I heard one of the GM's say to the waiter at the fresh yoghurt counter: 'Sir, there are no more plates for the yoghurt. So now what, we have to put it in our hands or what ?' Very respectfull I must say ... I still regret not having answered the lady in question ! I think that a lot of GO's (more specifically the French ones) need to learn some manners. They think that because they pay a lot of money (because yes: it is a large amount of money to have a Club Med holiday), they can do and behave however they can.
The food was very repetitive: mashed potatoes, salad, tomatoes, pizza, hamburgers and chicken. Eric (at the Pasta counter) however made delicious pasta at lunch and for dinner. And the fresh orange juice at breakfast was also excellent !
The 'Chef de village' Bachir was very present during our stay, as well as Marco (GO responsable Animation). We did not encounter any problems with any of the GO's.
I must honnestly say that we will not rebook this Club as its price-quality is not outbalanced at all. A real shame as the setting is very beautiful !!!

Room Tip: Get a bungalow with sea-view (with AC) but make sure you're near the pool to keep it accessible...

“Very friendly, with lots to do”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 3 August 2011

After a delay with our flight we arrived at Smir at 3 o’clock in the morning. We were welcomed by several GOs and yes; they were all smiling, even at that time in the morning.
We had a fair walk to our accommodation, which was a lovely bungalow right on the beach. Our luggage was delivered swiftly and we slept soundly in the comfortable beds. The accommodation is a little dated, but it was clean and comfortable. Our bungalow was about a 7-minute walk from the restaurant and there were quite a few steps up to the restaurant. They do have a minibus to save you walking, but we enjoyed the walk and appreciated the open spaces in the resort, as we didn’t feel that we were packed in. It was very quiet at night, with only the waves rolling in the background and none of the usual disco music to keep you awake. If you have mobility issues, you would need to ask for accommodation nearer the restaurant.

Next morning we arrived for breakfast at 9am to find that there wasn’t the usual full choice of buffet, as food had run out and not been replenished. They were also a bit slow to clear away used crockery. It wasn’t what you would expect from Club Med, but next day we realised that it was best to arrive for breakfast a bit earlier, when there was a full selection and the dining room was not so busy and we had a much better experience. The food in the restaurant was good and the waiters were very friendly and helpful. We were well looked after and as we were a large party, we appreciated a large table being found for us when we arrived. We also ate in the restaurant on the beach, where the choice was more limited, but food was freshly cooked and good.

It was a surprise to us that we enjoyed the entertainment in the open-air theatre. The shows were good and well above the usual standard. The staff were all very friendly and really seemed to enjoy their jobs. Although the staff were all very nice, I couldn’t write this without mentioning Laura, who was the only English member of staff in the resort and she phoned us on the first day to arrange to meet us in the evening. Her badge stated she was from London, she was actually from the Isle of Man, but in Morocco, that counts as London. Laura looked after us all week and it made a difference to have a member of staff who was English as we learned a lot more about the place and the activities. Many of the staff spoke English in varying degrees, but it was also useful to have bit of schoolgirl French.
We spent most of our week on the beach, sailing, kayaking and lounging on the numerous sun beds available. There were plenty of hoby cats available and although there was instruction and help on hand, the staff didn’t make you feel like you were back at school and it wasn’t as regimented as some other resorts.
We also did archery, but didn’t have the time or the energy to join in with tennis activity that was always going on.

We had an enjoyable week in this resort. The staff are very friendly and helpful, the accommodation is well spaced out, comfortable and clean, but could do with updating. There are lots of activities to do and the food is good. This resort seemed a very happy resort with all the staff enjoying their jobs and wanting to make sure that we had a good time, which we did.

“Too close to road”

Of you dont mind to be close to the noisy 4 lane coastal highway (very busy), like to sail or tennis, have kies that speak french and like group activities, this place gives you good value for money. The more you combine of THE above,THE better your value. Pool bungalows are ok and have ac. The show theatre is built next to the hotel above the restaurant. Don't book that unless you like to get all the shows plus the decibels of it.
