The name of the Hotel Splendid always makes me smile. A hotel that can call itself Splendid must certainly live up to its expectations, right? Well, this hotel did, and far exceeded any expectations I had for the place.
After a long and sometimes frightening drive from Banesa Airport in Bucharest to Contstanta, we arrived at the Hotel Splendid in Mamaia. The hotel was not hard to find at all. I recognized it from the picture on the Internet and the fact that it sat on the lake side rather than the sea side. We parked the car in the lot, said our hellos to a few stray dogs, and walked in to the hotel. Before we got into the hotel, our impressions were that there wasn’t much near the hotel. You would have to cross the street and then there were a plethora of resorts. Being that we were staying there at the end of March, there were not many people out and about. When we walked into the hotel, we weren’t sure if we were the only ones staying in the hotel.
When we checked in, we were greeting politely by the hotel staff. As soon as we gave our names and reservation information (we made our reservations on hotels.com), the receptionist said she had to go get the manager. Oh no, what happened. Well, the manager came out and said hello. He was very friendly and told us they were upgrading us complimentary to one of their apartments. Skeptical at first, we agreed. We had a corner apartment on the fourth floor with views of the car parking lot, the lake, and across the street. It was a lovely hotel room with a balcony, living area, huge bathroom, separate bedroom with chairs and a little bar area with a barstool. Oh we certainly wished we were staying for more than one night. The mini bar prices were reasonable (for American standards) and even compared to the other hotel we stayed in in Romania. The room even had robes and slippers. I should also add that the next morning there was construction going on near the road across the street. It was very loud outside, but inside our room, it was barely audible.
Because we were tired and didn’t want to get back into the car and venture into Constanta, we opted to eat at the hotel. We were the only diners in there at the time and there were two waiters. A Jean Claude Van Damme movie was playing. I expected the prices to be a lot higher than what they were being that it was a hotel, and while I’m sure the prices by Romanian standards are high, we didn’t find them to be too bad. We ordered the polenta and were pleased with that. Also a summer salad, and my boyfriend got one of the chef’s specialities with chicken, pork and beef. I had a chicken dish. We weren’t paying attention when we ordered potatoes because we ended up ordering French fries. For dessert, we had doborgea (sp?) pancakes which were very good. We only wanted one order, but they split up the order on two plates. While the waiters weren’t overly friendly, they did answer questions and attended to our needs. We had a nice bottle of Romanian wine and really enjoyed our dinner. I wouldn’t say that the food is the best in the world, but the chef had amazing presentation on all the dishes. They looked wonderful.
The next morning, we went down for breakfast and the buffet had a variety of cheeses, meats, cucumbers, tomatoes, yogurt, and cereal, pastries, etc. It was a decent selection of items to give you a morning boost.
When we checked out, we had some questions about where we were going. I can’t comment enough on how helpful the staff was showing us where to go on the maps we had. They even took the time to write out some Romanian sayings with English translations of how to get to various places. They truly went above and beyond, and I must commend them on their service. If I ever return to that area, I will without a doubt stay at this property again.
