“Quiet days, pleasantly lively nights. Would stay here again.”

Overall, Kismet Dao is much better than average. I stayed here for two nights in May 2011.

PROS:

- Modern clean rooms, with great views of the mountains and the residential. The room I was in had a huge window. This is not a run-down place at all. It is very well-maintained. It was quiet and serene--great for a daytime nap. Lockers were huge, free, and locks provided. They will easily take your backpack and then some. The Chinese symbols and an explanation of their meaning with the wall posters added to that serenity.

- For each night there, they give you a free beer. Beers are cheap anyway, but yeah, I'll take free! Upon check-in, the staff member gives you a chit of paper to claim your drink.

- They have towels you can use for free. Internet is free too.

- My fellow hostellers were very outgoing, and nearly all spoke English. They slowly rolled in as the night approached. Most stayed at the hostel to drink. Nightlife (well, what little there is in Brasov on Monday and Tuesday) was less than a 10 minute walk away. It was surprising to see so many hanging around the hostel in such a residential area.

Neutral comment:

- The hostel location is not near the train station, and is hidden away in a residential area. It took about 20 to 30 minutes to make the walk, which I did not mind because it was such a nice day and I wanted to see the town on foot. Tip: If walking, study a map ahead of time. There is a map of Brasov in front of the train station. The hostel is on a big hill. Definitely not located where you would expect it to be! But the fact that is away from the central area makes it quaint and quiet.

CONS, all minor stuff:

- The showers are great, but the spray from them splashes around and pools on the floor, close to the sink. It pools up quite a bit, more than shower shoes will protect you from. Don't drop anything. It will be soaked!

- The TV room is tucked away in the basement, and its door is shut much of the time, so I did not see it used by anyone while I was there. That would improve the social aspect of the hostel.

- There is no advertised "lockout", but during the day with some comings-and-goings, I had to knock a few times get back in.

Room Tip: The room directly adjacent to the reception!

“One of the best”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 5 June 2011

Brasov is a beautiful city and our stay with Kismet was awesome. The dorms and beds are exceptionally clean, along with the kitchen and bathrooms too. The lounge area downstairs is very cool, with a big TV, movies, comfy couches and some art on the walls you really must see! With WiFi, breakfast and laundry this hostel is fantastic value for money and in a great location too. After a long day out, it was really comfortable to come back to, cook some dinner and chill. Maybe we were lucky with the other travelers but we also made lots of friends here! Receptionist was super friendly and helpful. We really wished we could've stayed longer than 3 nights! We would definitely stay here again and recommend to anyone else going through Brasov.

I didn't know what to expect after having read so many negative and positive reviews.
Well, mine is 100% positive! The staff was very helpful and the location was convenient.
The hostel was nicely decorated, esp the walls. It's quite cheap for what you get, highly recommended!

“Stay Elsewhere in Brasov”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed 29 August 2010

I wish I'd booked my stay at Kismet Dao through one of the big hostel booking sites so that my review could reach more backpackers, as I think there are some important things to know before booking a bed or room here.

I always like to stay in smaller rooms in hostels, and while there were no six-bed rooms available I did get into a seven-bed room on the top floor, called The Snorer's Den. In addition to the seven beds advertised, there was also a mattress placed on the floor (under the window that didn't seem to close properly), and with someone on the mattress every night it was actually an eight-bed room. I think this practice is standard for the hostel. Outside the room there was a toilet, and down one or two floors there was a bathroom with two showers. I think there was one more toilet below that, and another shower (for men) on the ground floor. Anyways, access to showers and toilets was not a problem during my stay. There is also a lounge area on the ground floor, however I did not find the couches very comfortable and didn't really like hanging out there. There is one computer with internet access on the ground floor in addition to free wifi throughout. Breakfast consisted of milk, cereal and coffee, served in bowls that had a permanent layer of grime covering the insides.

Having been on an awesome tour through a hostel in Suceava, I was looking forward to going on another tour through a hostel. I booked a tour of Bran Castle, Rasnov Fortress and Peles Castle through the hostel. While it's great to do these as a tour (as you need a vehicle to do it in a day), the entire thing was a disorganized mess. The tour was scheduled to leave at 9:00 am, but the bus driver didn't show up until after 9:30. Then, we were rushed from site to site, barely given time for lunch, told Peles Castle closed at 3:00 pm (when actually it was more like 7:00 pm) and made to make a detour in the tour bus to drop the guide off at home first (I don't believe she was a licensed guide, either).

However, all of that paled in comparison to my final night in the hostel. In the middle of the night I woke up to an extremely strange sound. It was so unidentifiable that I actually thought I might be going crazy and would need to see a doctor the next morning. When the sun rose and I woke up again, there was a head peering down from the top bunk, staring at me. It was a small child. A small child who turned out to be extremely ill, on medication, and occasionally hooked up to a ventilator. The hostel had allowed him and his mother to SHARE a bed in a dorm room (which was already over the posted guest limit due to the mattress on the floor). As the child's meds wore off he coughed and hacked, and his mother kept going up and down the bunk bed ladder. I know hostels need to make money, but allowing a SICK child and his mother to SHARE a bed in a dormitory is totally inappropriate. As the morning progressed many of the people in the room also started showing symptoms of a cough or flu, and I ended up being sick for the next three weeks (requiring me to pay for more expensive private rooms so as to not spread my germs to other people in dorms).

I can't recommend Kismet Dao when there are other hostels in Brasov that are much more comfortable and much better organized.

“Friendly place in beautiful surroundings”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 30 July 2010

Kismet Dao is a great place to stay. The receptionists are extremely friendly, funny and helpful, not to mention beautiful, and all speak perfect english. We arrived at 4 am and didnt have a room to stay in until the next night, but the receptionist let us sleep on the coaches in the basement and told us romanian bedtime stories until we nodded off. The atmosphere is relaxed. and there are views over the surrounding town and hills from the top floors. One negative point is that there is only 1 shower for males, and you will have to wait to use it in the morning. If you're into eastern philosophy, there are little pearls of Taoist wisdom posted all around on the walls. I'd stay here again, the price was right too. Unfortunately, they don't accept small pieces of string and smiles as payment.
