“Energetic ans friendly staff, not too bad otherwise”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 19 July 2011

The two sisters who run the hostel from day to day are energetic like Duracell bunnies and will try to help you out even unasked.
Besides the hostel, the owner also maintains an apartment with a few rooms and shared bathroom, which is basic but decnt enough. The hostel rooms are a bit of a factory. Large with beds lined up right next to each other. There are no lockers.

The location is almost in the heart of town. Convenient for the evenings, but also far from the stations.

Room Tip: Don't stay in the dorms

“Tourism is on the rise in Brasov and everyone is heartily welcome to make a buck. But this is not the way we do it..”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 8 February 2011

Okay this is not a bad hostel, but it is the most disappointing place I have ever stayed in so far. Due to the sleeper train I arrived in Brasov at 6 AM. That is completely my own problem, but I was hoping someone to respond to the buzzer. While I looked at the facade I thought: nooo this looks like an ordinary residence!! After one night sleeping in the streets I checked in, to find out it IS just another ordinary home. I was amazed that the communal area actually is a living room, I mean it is like visiting your neighbours on the tea. There was absolutely zero character.
I was slightly shocked about the amount of bathrooms. There was one at the first floor, one in the basement but frequently locked because it was part of a more expensive room. There was another one on the second floor that I discovered later on. But there were way too many guests staying for the amount of bathrooms like between 40 and 50 travelers on the day I left. There was one piece of scrap as an internet terminal. And the twenty years old-screen had a distorted display. I haven't seen the kitchen, but never wanted to make use of it. It seems like the actual cooking space was inside a formerly converted closet.
About the rooms: don't get me started. I booked the 8-dorm which I preferred above the 10 and 12 dormitories, but was astonished by the fact that you have to cross rooms for it. Only to find out that this more expensive room is just like the cheaper rooms but with less beds in a much smaller place. I felt very cheated because the cheaper beds were exactly the same, you don't get any better quality or upgrade for booking more expensive rooms.
I can understand why someone wants to make money on offering tours. In the end I signed up for the bran-rasnov-poiana brasov-and behind the brasov letters-tour and although the tour guides were helpful and friendly, they didn't give me a REAL tour. They only drove me to the places which were a 10 minute drive and can be easily arranged by yourself. I cannot judge if they were lying when they told me the road to poiana braosv was under construction as I was only brought to the first two places, but it sounded just suspicious to me.
Of course of course I want everyone to be happy and make money from tourism, but this went way too far. It was okay if they'd invest the profit into new computers or kitchen equipment, but clearly they don't. Bran and Rasnov are beautiful and absolutely worth the money, however by simply getting to these places by public and own transportation, you can put these strange tours with stiff prices to an end.

“I Loved This Hostel!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 29 August 2010

I ended up in Brasov a second time after a misadventure resulting in my being stranded in the middle of nowhere, Transylvania, then driven by some guardian angels almost one hundred kilometres back to Brasov! Of course I didn't have a hostel reservation, and the hostel I'd stayed at before (Kismet Dao) was fully booked, so I called Rolling Stone as it was recommended in my guidebook. The girl who answered the phone was very friendly and offered me my choice of rooms- I opted for the six-bed dorm.

When I arrived a young(ish) Romanian girl was running around dealing with some kind of situation which had just arisen. She handed me the registration form and promised to be back shortly. Yeah, it took a few minutes for her to return, but it was clear that she was busy trying to make someone's stay more comfortable. She offered me some information about the town and local attractions, but I told her I was familiar with the area and had already seen most of the attractions, and that was that. There was zero pressure to sign up for any tour, although after being egged on by some other travelers I did sign up for a thirty-lei "bear watching" tour where you can get up close and personal with the bears that frequent the dumpsters behind Romanian apartment blocks (as ridiculous as it sounds it was actually fun!).

The hostel has a really comfortable common area with a computer, plush sofa, coffee tables and TV. It was a popular hangout place throughout the day and a good place to meet other travelers. My six-bed dorm with ensuite was very clean and quiet, and it never got too warm. It's true that they do lock the outside doors around 1:00 am, but all you have to do is ring the doorbell and someone will let you in immediately (I should know... I met some guys in the common room and we ended up at a disco until 5:00 am!). The location is good- it's about a ten-minute walk into the town center, near the two other main hostels in the town, and close to an awesome Romanian restaurant. There is also a direct bus (#51) to the bus/train station that leaves regularly from less than a block away.

If I were to return to Brasov I would definitely stay here again- it was one of the most positive hostel experiences of my seven-week trip!

“A joke of a hostel”
1 of 5 stars Reviewed 23 August 2010

How this place can get any good reviews I do not know.
We arrived around midday and were told that the private room we booked was not ready which was fine so we amused ourselves in Brasov's town centre for a couple of hours. On our return we were told that it still wasn't ready and it would only take another hour or so. We were also told that this private room wasn't actually in the hostel but in an apartment on the other side of town and someone from the hostel would have to drive us there. There was no mention of this on their website where we booked the room and we felt this was rather dishonest.

We got to see some of the hostel whilst waiting around for the staff to take us to the other apartment. The dorms seemed dark and stuffy and very overcrowded with beds. Had I of been travelling solo I wouldn't of been happy staying in one of these rooms. One hour turned into almost three before we were finally taken to the other apartment which turned out to be on the top floor of a grimey tower block! It was also at least a 30-40 minute walk to the actual hostel.
We were assured that it was a 7 minute walk from the tower block to the main square but after timing it we discovered it was in fact 20 minutes just to get to the bottom of the pedestrianised street that led to the square. There was so much dishonesty it was unbelievable! As we were placed so far from the actual hostel we were unable to take advantage of the free internet and breakfast that was allegedly on offer so there was no value for money at all.

The flat itself is plain and soul-less. There are three 'private' bedrooms although none of them have their own key so we were unable to leave valuables behind whilst out.
There is a kitchen that we thought we would make use of but most of the pans were so old and rusty that we decided against it. There was also a lack of utensils to cook with. . The bathroom contained a washing machine that didn't work - another unhelpful aspect of being so far away from the actual hostel which offered a laundry service.
Nothing seemed very well though out.

We also had a hassle getting our 50 lei deposit back for the key to the flat and they begrudgingly sent a member of staff over to us the night before we were due to leave, to return our money and give us instructions on what to do with the key. They were quite happy for us to leave the key hidden in the flat, leaving the place completely unlocked on our departure. The whole thing was very strange.

Beware of their over-priced tours!!! The pushy staff only seem interested in making money out of the excursions they offer. Without thinking we booked the Bran/Sinaia castles tour. We soon discovered that we had been ripped off and could of visited both places on a DIY trip using public transport for a tiny fraction of what they charged us.

This is by far the worst place I've ever stayed in and it cast a shadow over what should of been a nice relaxing few days in a Brasov.

“The worst hostel that I visited”
1 of 5 stars Reviewed 15 August 2010

You should avoid this hostel if you want to stay in Brasov.

I arrived this hostel about 9am, but there is no manager at that time.
I heard that she was sleeping so we waited for 10a hour.
At 10pm, she appeared and informed us their guided tour!
It took also 30 minutes although I don't want to know about their guided tour.

After having a dinner, I want to get my bed, but there is no manager again.
I waited for 2 hours for getting my room, so we wasted almost 3 hours!

Don't go there if you want to save time and money.

If you go to the sites of their tour independently, you will spend only 50% of the price of tour. The paragliding is 60 Euro at that hostel. If you go to Bontoc independently, it is only 150 leu. If you go to Bran castle independently, you will spend only 10 leu, but guided tour is more than 45 leu.

Try to stay in Kismet hostel which is close to Rollingstone. It is much much better!
Rolling stone hostel was the most terrible hostel that I stayed.
