I can not emphasise enough how nice, interesting and caring Miran, the owner of Hostel Miran, is. He (or his brother) meets all guests at the bus or train station and helps to carry their packs back to the hostel (5 minute walk). When you arrive he gives you a tour of the hostel and shows you to your room. Renovations have recently been completed on most of the hostel, the majority of the hostel appears newer than those photos displayed on hostel booking websites.
My sister became very sick with food poisoning on the first night we arrived (not from eating in Mostar!), Miran was very concerned - he took me to two pharmacies to buy medicine (at about 9pm at night), came in a number of times during the night to check she was getting better and bought her tea and pomegranate! He was so sweet and would sit on the end of her bed and entertain her etc! He felt like a brother / dad, he has been the best host we have encountered during our 4 month backpacking trip. I can't explain how much he enhanced our stay in Mostar - we ended up extending for one more night it was so great!
Anyway - a little off point - back to Mostar and the hostel: the hostel is a short walk from both the bus/train station and the main tourist sights (being the old town and famous bridge). It is very easy to navigate the city by foot using Hostel Miran as your base. The Hostel is located just off one of the main roads in Mostar which is filled with cafes, supermarkets etc so it is very easy to settle in and get supplies. Location is great.
We stayed in a twin private room which was cosy, the beds were extremely comfortable. We had a bathroom which would have been shared with a triple private room (we were the only ones staying though). The bathroom has just been renovated and is nice and modern, there is an abundance of hot water too! Miran also provides slippers and towels for your stay.
There is a small kitchen that has a stove top, kettle, fridge etc and is sufficient to cook basic meals e.g. Pasta. We cooked our own meals most days. In the kitchen area there is a computer with fast free internet to use. Next door to the kitchen is a room with couches, books, photo albums etc to relax in. Miran keeps the hostel impeccably clean, every time we left our room he was out and about cleaning or working on some part of the hostel.
We visited Mostar in the middle of winter, so there was not that much happening. By the looks of things and reading other travellers reviews, Miran's personal war (10 euro) and Mostar tours (25 euro) are fantastic and well worth doing - we are hoping to make it back in Summer to take one of these tours. I am sure he runs them in winter too but we were short on time.
I would not have a second thought on re-booking to stay at Hostel Miran on my return to Mostar and would recommend that you consider staying here on your visit to Mostar. Miran is the invisible glue that holds this great Hostel together and he alone is worth staying at the Hostel for. Thanks for an enjoyable stay!!!
