My family stayed at Villa Fortuna in July 2011 for 3 nights. We had been touring Croatia and made the trip to see Mostar. We were very glad we did as it became one of the two best things we did on our trip. Nela, who is the owner and proprieter of the Villa Fortuna, was extremely helpful to me while I was planning the trip. Months before we even departed California for our trip she was already offering the services of the Fortuna tour agency. We had them pick us up from our hotel in the Dubrovnik area and drive us to Mostar. The transportation for our family of three from Dubrovnik to Mostar was extremely affordable, comfortable and convenient. We did rent a car for part of our trip in Croatia, but for the time when we did not have a car, it was actually a huge relief to let someone else do the driving. When we first got to Mostar I was somewhat leery of how it was going to be, because none of the beauty of it can be seen from the road. Travelers should know that Mostar still shows many many signs of the recent war, with mortar shell markings in the road and many buildings that are still missing roofs or have sidings riddled with bullet holes. An inexperienced traveler (which I was before this trip) would be a little surprised at the entrance to this hotel, because the surrounding neighborhood has some graffiti and signs of the old war. HOWEVER, I would highly recommend this hotel, not just for how it is inside, but also indeed for the location. (More on that later.) Inside the Villa there is a lovely and well manicured yard where we spent a lot of time sitting outside and snacking in the afternoons when were where back from exploring the town. We had two rooms on the same floor. (Pretty sure there are three floors, but not positive about this as it's been 6 months since we were there.) Our main room, the family apartment, had a large nice sitting room with a balcony. This is not an area with lovely architectual views. But the surrounding mountains that form sort of a valley (which Mostar is in) are enchanting. We had air conditioning in all of our rooms, and that was an unexpected bonus as I was not expecting Villa Fortuna to have it. We had a good sized kitchen and refridgerator and there is a very nice, small market right around the corner where you can walk and get your groceries. The sitting area was good sized also and had many books in several languages, couches and a TV (which we did not use). Our daughter had a smaller room to herself, which she was very happy to have. It had it's own balcony and a better view, I believe her view was over-looking the back yard. Breakfast was served downstairs every morning, at a time arranged with Nela before hand. Breakfast in Croatia and Bosnia-Herzegovina usually consisted of a variety of cold cut meats, fruits and juices, yogurt and coffee. Nela, the owner, is very fluent not only in English, but also in the history of Bosnia-Herzegovina and the entire region of the former Yugoslavia. Now, about the location. The purpose for anyone to venture into this area is to see Mostar. We spent several days there and were able to see everything I wanted to see on foot. (I had read extensively about this area before the trip.) This is not an area where a traveler would be able to find large, luxury hotels (thank goodness!). Most of the buildings are rather square and outwardly un-embellished. It seemed to me that the Villa Fortuna was as close to true comfort as one could possibly find in a region such as this one. We were in Croatia and Bosnia-Herzegovina for 15 days, and our days at the Villa Fortuna were one of the two best things we did when we were there. There is a lot culture to experience in Mostar. Villa Fortuna is about 5-7 minute walk from the old bridge; a fantastic place to spend hours wandering. Across the bridge, about 15 minutes past the other side, one can reach the Turkish houses (where they offer tours) and mosques, actually pretty grave yards, outdoor markets and even a farmers market for produce, etc. There are also a few coffee houses where one can sit and watch the world go by. We're big swimmers and my husband swam in the river under the bridge. We did not see many people swimming and for that reason (and I was intimidated by the rush of the water) I did not swim. But my husband swam across the river and joined with some men who were jumping off a platform. (And yes, he's still here with me! :-) When our trip was over, Nela arranged for one of the Fortuna Tours drivers to take us back to the Dubrovnik area so we could fly back to the USA a day or two later. It was sad to leave Mostar, and I will remember it always, and Nela and the Villa Fortuna.
