“Barely 3 stars”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 3 August 2010

Let's have the positive thing first - the location is quite good. A walk of just under ten minutes will get you into the old town of Zadar. And there is plenty of free parking.
Otherwise I am at a loss why they claim to have 4 stars... The rooms are okay - a little bit on the tiny side and the amenities are spartan. The refurbishing obviously was done with out the consultation of an interior designer, and the outside look is horrible. The pool area is not really inviting to stay there and offers no service whatsoever. And don't dare to come to the hotel after 23:00 and look for something to drink. All is closed and the reception simply doesn´t help at all. After several inquiries the guy behind the country gave me directions to some street bars a little further down the road - all the while carefully avoiding to be friendly.
During my stay I had a meeting with another colleague who was staying at the Bastion - definitely the place to go.

“Generally disappointing, in a delightful town that needs lots of visitors”

The tour group only stayed one night, but the set dinner was very poor, and the breakfast wasn't much better. My (single) bedroom felt very small with a very high-sided bath/shower it was difficult to get in/out of. Peversely however I found Zadar one of the most delightful places we visited in Croatia, with the old town approx 15 minute walk from the hotel.

“Excellent stay”

Despite negative reviews form a couple years ago, this hotel has undergone a major re-fit and updated decor, and is now a place that I would recomment to anyone. It has standard above -average rooms, and although they may seem small to the North American traveller, they are certainly up to par by European standards in ameneities and cleanliness. It has a lovely waterfront, and is only a 10-15 min walk from the old city where everything is available. The breakfast buffet is standard for the area, with choices of hot foods, cold cuts, cheeses, cereals, fruits and LOTS of bread (my favourite reason to come to the area!). The dinner menu is also good (try the Dalmatian Fish Soup) with upper class service by the wait staff.
All in all, an excellent place to stay and see the area.

“Excellent stay”

Have visited the hotel over the course of a few years and have seen true and great improvements from the staff to service and the actual hotel itself! Price standards appear to be quite fair when taking into consideration its prime location, views and 4 star standards, and of course in comparison to other European cities. I would definitely return to this hotel and encourage others to make the visit to this beautiful city!

“Communist orphan hotel”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed 1 July 2009

The kindest review I have seen of this hotel is that it recently had a facelift. Upon entering, one can see why..... it rates itself as a four star establishment, however at best this is an overpriced three star hotel. The front desk had a grumpy older gentleman running the ship. The website easily leads to confusion as to what one is booking (highly recommend hammering it out in person over the phone and triple checking your bill), and he kept repeating over and over that it was on the website. They took our passports and told us to return in 30 minutes to retrieve them. Three visits later, each spaced over 30 miutes, with no apology or smile, we had them back. The hotel itself is furnished on a budget, with horrible pink paint in the rooms, a sad looking pool and a backalley entrance to the water. Breakfast is bleak with coffee which must have been brewed by Tito himself. The only thing going for this hotel is its location, however it is horrendously overpriced.
