The hotel is located in the town centre, near the tip of the peninsula. It is about a 15 minute walk from the bus/ railway stations. There is little sign of the bastion itself inside the building, apart from the half-oval staircase, it is mainly a solid C19th house.
Reception was friendly and efficient with a cheery greeting whenever one passed.
I had single occupancy of a double room. Spacious, old-fashioned decor, pleasant, view out mainly of trees and through them of the ferry-port, minibar, television (BBC and CNN in English), room safe. Lighting could usefully have been brighter, and blackout curtains were not quite wide enough to prevent sunlight coming in at the edges. Comfortable bed. Clean, except that I felt that I had to wash the shelf in the fridge. Efficient housekeeping - room was made up while I was at breakfast.
Large shower room, with spacious walk-in shower. Soap and shower gel/shampoo only, OK. Lots of racks and a heated towel rail. Clean.
Breakfast was a good buffet selection, with cooked eggs available on demand. Friendly service.
Overall, pleasant, well-sited. It was by far the most expensive of the four hotels that I stayed in in Croatia and Trieste, and no better than two of the others. The value for money was therefore my only question, though of course price levels are location-specific.
