“Zvijezdicva Street and 100 steps”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 12 June 2011

First, Stijepo has 2 "apartments" he rents out. One is about 200 yds. outside the Ploce Gate that he thinks is better. We stayed at his apt. in the Old Town on Zvijezdicva, near the Wall by the sea (no view) which is up a lot of steps. These reviews in TripAdvisor cover both, so read carefully

Stijepo met us at the Excelsior Hotel (I called him with a cell, but the hotel will call for you). He lives (and other apt) about a block from the hotel. We dropped off our bags at the old town gate and wife stood guard. Then took car to Hotel Argentina (near Excelsior) where he has special parking rate. Walked (10 min) to bags and then Stijepo picked up both large bags and off we went. It is about 15-20 min from Gate to Apt - up the last half.

Apt is medium sized with everything you want - fridge, stove, TV, a/c, coffee maker, utensils, etc. - even a small washing machine. But wash early as it takes 1.5 days to dry by laying clothes out on a rack due to humidty.

Good: Very quiet, narrow "alley". Only 2 blocks from "Cold Drinks", the ideal spot to nurse a beer overlooking the sea. Price is right. Stijepo is a fountain of info - although once in we did not need to contact him.

Bad: Going up those steps - so do not leave something behind when going out. And taking bags back to the Gate (no vehicles allowed inside the Old City) was a slow, process.

Stijepo has great map of the Old City, but google the core area if driving in as it would be confusing on how to get to Excelsior hotel otherwise.

This is not a 4 star place, but very safe, quiet, and has everything you need (other than a clothes dryer). Beds were ok.

Room Tip: Reserve 3 mo. ahead for mid June - mid Sept.

Hello

Thanks for your review. We are happy that you spent nice time here in Dubrovnik.
Thanks to your review we wont to give tourist who wish to come in Dubrovnik a few advices.

Yes, we have three apartments, Dubrovnik-center inside of city walls and apartments Lavanda and Old port 3-4 minutes walking from the entrance in the old city, with terace, sea view, internet, 30 sec. from the beach...
We thing they are located on the better location than apartment inside of the city walls, out from the noise and lot`s of tourist from cruiser ships. The best area for accommodation and living is Ploce area. Our house is opposite of hotel Excelsior, the most popular hotel in Croatia, but for sea view is necessary to pay extra 95 euros.
My (Stijepo`s) grandmother lives in the house inside of city walls but she has separate entrance in the house. She is a 89 years old and she is in excellent condition thanks to the steps, not 100 hundred but enough.
We don`t recommend apartments inside of city walls to older and disables persons because inside of city walls it has lot`s of steps everywhere. For that reason apartments Lavanda and Old port are better option because we have only a few steps at the entrance in the house.

Please don`t use a car in Dubrovnik because the parking is very expensive and definitely you don`t need a car here in Dubrovnik. The price for parking in the season is 10 kunas fo one hour, all day 240 kunas, 34 euros. From this season guests have laundry on the entrance in the city, Ploce gate.

Best regards from Ivana and Stijepo

“Perfect Location, Lovely Apartment, Fantastic Host”

Myself and my wife decided to stay in the Lavanda Apartment after reading reviews on TripAdvisor. I must agree that it deservers the high ratings it has received.

The apartment is clean and bright with a comfortable bed, plenty of wardrobe space, a small kitchen with a fridge, cooker and coffee maker. The bathroom has a nice powerful shower with a constant supply of hot water. There is also satellite TV, air conditioning and WIFI.

The apartment is a short walk from Dubrovnik's Ploče Gate and has a bakery, supermarket and beach on its doorstep.

Stijepo is an excellent host. He arranged our taxi to/from the airport and spent time ensuring that we had all the information we needed to make the most of our holiday. Stijepo is an extremely friendly and welcoming guy who is determined that guests enjoy their visit to his town.

I would definately recommend the Lavanda Apartment and I hope to return there to enjoy the beautiful city of Dubrovnik in the future.

We stay at apartment Lavander, 300m from old city. Clean, beautiful, new apartment. Have a huge terrasse (share with Stijepo's mother's house) with sea and city view. Stijepo is very helpful. We recommand this place. The second apartement (Old port) should be a little bit dark.

“Apartment Dubrovnik Center ... a whole lot more than just a place to stay”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 16 October 2010

When you stay at Apartment Dubrovnik Center you get a whole lot more than just a beautiful old apartment in the centre of the old walled city of Dubrovnik, in one of its loveliest narrow laneways. You get to experience the hospitality, charm and huge personality that is Stijepo, the owner, who gives you the local flavour like few others could.

Not only did Stijepo organise a taxi to meet us at the Dubrovnik marina at the end of our yacht charter, he came out with the driver to personally welcome us. We arrived quite early in the morning before the apartment was available, so Stijepo organised for our luggage to be stored at a friend's restaurant nearby and proceeded to spend over 2 hours giving us a personal tour of the city.

I should point out that when it comes to luggage, the old city of Dubrovnik with its steep and numerous steps can be a challenging place to haul your case. However Stijepo carried a couple of our bags, probably totally over 45kg (I definitely wasn't travelling light), up the steepest of steps like he was carrying a couple of small handbags. I suspect the nickname of 'king kongs' for his sons are very apt.

He then proceeded to buy us coffee and ice-cream at the best places, whilst pointing out all the restaurants we should try during our stay (and his recommendations were spot on), he also shared his family's history in Dubrovnik and his own personal connection with this lovely city. We were all touched by his account of the hardships he and his family, and so many had endured during the war, and were grateful to have been offered such a personal account.

Whilst we did talk about the serious and hard times in Dubrovnik's recent history, there was a whole lot of laughter too during our ad hoc and totally unexpected tour. Stijepo constantly apologised for speaking English so fast, but it was his continual humorous nuances, jokes and agile use of the English language that kept us on our toes.

Our experience of Croatia before we got to Dubrovnik was one of a gorgeous country, with the most engaging of locals. Our host Stijepo embodied that, a generous, warm, gregarious person, so happy and proud to tell us about his beautiful part of the world and share it with us. The two hours we spent with him felt more like two days, and set the tone of our stay in Dubrovnik.

And yes, the apartment was everything we hoped for and more. Close to what must be one of the most spectacular bars in the world - Buza 1, literally carved into the rocks outside the city wall, on a cliff overlooking the water. And when we arrived at our apartment, chilling in the fridge was the champagne friends had left with Stijepo and Ivana 2 months earlier during their stay, for us to enjoy, together with the champagne flutes to drink it.

If you're a traveller who wants a connection with the places you visit, rather than a tourist passing through, this is the place to stay in Dubrovnik. I wouldn't think of staying with any other, or better, host.

I found this apartment through trip advisor & it was everything we were looking for.
We stayed in the old port apartments, the location was great only a short walk to the old town & everything without climbing lots of steps!
There was also a lovely beach just over the road from the apartment.
Stijepo was very welcoming and helpful when we arrived & throughout our stay in croatia, we could not have asked for more!
I would defiantly recommend Dubrovnik apartments to all my family & friends I was very happy, and its a beautiful place.
