We were certainly not disapponted with Villa Lanterna, in fact we were pleasantly surprised. If you are after 5 star expensive luxury you would need to get closer to Dubrovnik itself, and pay through the nose. If you are like my wife and I and prefer a place away from the 'Maddening crowd' then this is the place for you. Nevertheless I like to scout around and 'suss' out restaurants and other hotels and I imagine coming back and staying in a more convenient location! My wife always says "you get what you pay for"! However Villa Lanterna is probably a cut above the rest - mainly because of the staff, the views and the superb cleanliness of the place. It is a small hotel (I would call it an Aparthotel really). It has spacious rooms and seems to be divided into rooms only (at the front and with the best views) and for some unexplained reason these do not come with breakfast included. Whereas the rooms with kitchens (presumably 'Self Catering') have breakfast included in the room price and are at the rear (these have 'views' but you have to be higher up).
I read a previous review (before we left) which said that the hotel could pick you up on arrival at the Airport but I couldn't get their email address from our Travel Agency. I found it by other means. I mention this because a mini-bus/taxi from the airport is about £45 (one way) and the mini-bus from the hotel is 280 Kuna (about £35). So email Hotel Lanterna at madison@du.t-com.hr and dear Doris will arrange everything.
A car would have been convenient but expensive and we would be walking around the City a lot of the time and parking is a nightmare! I remember other reviewers talking about the food at Lanterna - they said it was good, and I sometimes regret not eating there but we found that the beachside Pizzaria suited our needs (mixed grill is good) and they had the sunset views, plus, we tended to spend most of our 4 days in and around Dubrovnik itself. We found that the restaurants outside and around the main entrance to the Town were a bit less expensive than those that capture the Cruise Ship crowd inside the walls. We took a short trip to Cavtat by one of the harbour boats which had lovely bayside restaurants and beautique hotels. Don't forget the Cable Car - although I personally thought this was a bit of a rip off at £20 for what was a trip to the 'top of the hill' which takes about 8 minutes (if that).
Luca controls the Lanterna Mini-Bus and he was terrific. I think it is 3 Euros each to go to Dubrovnik and back (payable on the final bill) and he goes 10am, 3pm, 8pm and midnight - so he picks up at about those times for those who want to stay (advance warning to Luca or Doris back at the Ranch). Also you must 'walk the walls' (I think it cost about £4/5) but this was one of the walks/views that was well worthwhile.
