“What a fantastic hotel, right in the middle.”

The two of us stayed for 3 nights at the end of the season, and even then the roof terrace was open to enjoy a glass of champagne whilst looking over the old city.
The first morning we woke late and had missed breakfast, however the staff were kind enough to make up some trays of coffee, juice and pastries and let us have them in bed. This is the sort of service you love to get in a small family run hotel.
Youncant beat the location, in the heart of the city. And only a few minutes walk from the Hilton if you would like a few cocktails before dinner.
A beautiful stay.

“Fantastic Hotel in Amazing Location”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 2 June 2010

I travelled to Dubrovnik with 3 friends for a long weekend and we booked this hotel (more of a Boutique B&B really) because it was inside of the city walls and reasonably priced. Our expectations were not high as it was only 3* but it was an amazing find. Originally an old house, it has 8 rooms (4 single and 4 double) all with en suite. Whilst fairly basic, the rooms were spotlessly clean with every required amenity (safe, mini bar etc) and all bedlinen and towels changed daily. The staff were outstanding - polite, helpful, attentive. The breakfasts were excellent (on the roof terrace on warm days, downstairs on cooler days). The location was perfect, right in the centre of the old town and the building itself had character and charm. I would not hesitate to recommend this hotel to any traveller (we usually stay in 5*) and equally I would recommend Dubrovnik where everyone was really friendly. If you're looking for good restaurants, try Proto or Sesame.

“Excellent location, warm staff”

We were very pleased with our stay at Hotel Stari Grad. The location is wonderful in the Old City of Dubrovnik, especially for a short stay. Our room was quite spacious with comfortable bed and bathroom with nice shower. The patio on the top floor had a beautiful view although the weather prevented us from having breakfast up there. Breakfast was fine although the space inside was a little cramped. No problem for us to carry our bags up the stairs but one should plan ahead and pack lightly.

“Pleasant, clean and great location”

We stayed here in late June, 2008. The hotel is centrally located, being only 20 metres or so from the Placa (the main thoroughfare). The hotel was clean, the staff were friendly and helpful, and the view from the breakfast room on the roof is spectacular, especially in the early morning or at dusk.

The rooms, however, are pretty small. If your room is on one of the top floors, be prepared to climb many flights of stairs. Another poster commented on not knowing that the old town was car-free; we didn't have a problem with that as our guidebook had stated it. Obviously hotels within the old town will be more expensive than those outside the gates, but they are worth it, in order to be centrally located in this beautiful town.

“Perfectly decent, but quite expensive due to the location.”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 1 August 2009

We stayed just one night here at the end of our honeymoon. The location is within the old city walls and that's obviously why the hotel is quite expensive. For that you get a lovely room in a charming building. The rooftop terrace is lovely for breakfast. That said there's not much room and you may have to wait a while to get a seat. The breakfast itself was adequate. Nothing cooked. We had to request toast.

The room was really nice. The air conditioner was OK. Not fantastic but not bad either. In the morning I had a cold shower. Apparently the light switch wasn't a light switch. It was the switch for the boiler. It would have been useful to know that, and also how to operate the room safe.

By the way don't bring heavy luggage as there are six floors and no elevator. Thankfully I only had to drag our suitcase up one floor.

I'm reluctant to put a negative review of this hotel as the staff were all absolutely lovely. We couldn't understand them much but we understood enough to know that they were very friendly and welcoming.

Anyway to summarise, I'd say it's a perfectly nice hotel. However, it is very expensive for what you get in terms of breakfast, room, etc. The reason for that is of course the location.

If you can afford a bit more, stay at the Hilton. If you want the charm of staying within the old city walls in a family run hotel, and can't afford to sell a major organ to stay at the Palace, I'd recommend the Stari Grad. It's a good choice.
