“Newmarket holiday”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 7 November 2011

We have just spent 7 nights at the Hotel Komodor on a trip with Newmarket. Both of which were excellent. It was so easy to get a bus into the city of Dubrovnic where there is so much of interest and the trips organised by Newmarket were very interesting as well. Went early October and had perfect weather. Would certainly recomend this holiday.

Room Tip: We had an upgrade to a room with a balcony which was well worth it

“Nice staff”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 5 November 2011

We stayed here for 2 weeks as part of a Thompson's package. Generally pleased with the hotel - nice pool, compact yet adequate room and especially pleasant staff. We stayed full-board and we were happy with the food - buffet breakfast and evening meal - plenty of variety, though we learned that it was best to get to the evening meal early! Later on there was less choice.
The hotel is located close to Lapad 'Beach' - beach being the croatian word for rocks, concrete and gravel. Having said that, lounging around on Lapad Bay is not an unpleasant experience, even if a beautiful location has been ruined by some drastically ugly buildings and lack of building planning. Once we found our way around, we spent most days on Cava Beach in the Babin Kuk area. We found this to be relatively deserted with a view of the many ocean liners going in and out of Gruz. In addition there was a friendly, cheap bar so we could enjoy a beer in the sunshine. It is also a pleasant walk from Lapad to the top of the Babin Kuk penninsula.
Dubrovnik city is a short bus ride away, and tickets can be bought from the hotel reception. The city is beautiful and lively, though nightlife seems to be limited largely to bars and restaurants with little else to entertain. We found one place where there was live music (the Jazz Club Troubador) but watch their drink prices - about five times more than the average out of town bar - not good value considering the quality of the music! The best view of the city can be obtained from the top of Mount Srt - accessible by cable car - though we managed to find the path and walked up. Not sure why this path was so difficult to find.
Dubrovnik is a good place to explore southern Croatia and Montenegro - we hired a car for a few days (cheap - about £35 per day). It is an especially beautiful coast and once you get away from the city there are some idyllic locations for sunbathing and swimming. The Elephite Islands are worth a visit - but we just got on the ferry from Gruz Harbour rather than signing up for one of the ubiquitous (and very expensive) coach tours.
Lapad itself has a number of hotels and seems to be the main venue for tourists. Again there are lots of bars and restaurants - which is fine if you want to just drink and eat. However, none seem to make much effort to do anything else to attract trade.
We enjoyed our stay at the Komodor, but our overall Dubrovnk seems to be a destination for the retired middle classes - which is fine if you are retired and middle -class. Maybe we will go back in 20 years or so!

“Thumbs up from Ireland”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 13 October 2011

We stayed in the Hotel Komodor for 4 nights, at the end of September. Myself and my friend would overall, recommend this hotel to anyone staying in Dubrovnik. Pros: 1) Great location - the hotel is right across the road from the beach. Lapad Bay is beautiful and only a 10min bus ride to the Old Town. Bus tickets 10Kuna each way when bought at the hotel reception desk. They run from 420am to 1am, every 20 mins. 2) Friendly staff 3) Very safe 4) Very clean 5) Lovely pool area - for sunbathing, sun shines here in afternoon only though 6) Great, filling breakfasts 7) Lovely outdoor terrace for breakfast/lunch/dinner 8) Not too bad price wise Cons: 1) We stayed for 4 nights and were looking to book in for 1 more night later in the week (after our trip to Hvar) but they could not offer us a competitive price 2) Our 2 rooms were on the 4th floor and were dormer style so 1/3 of the room was slanted and you'd to lean over to access that part of the room 3) The same applied to the shower - I'm only 5ft 3 and had to kneel or sit in the shower. Impossible to stand up due to slant in the roof. 4) Single people are discriminated against in the fact that I had requested 2 x rooms with a sea view & balcony, if possible, but was told on checking in, that they do not offer that to single room bookings. I think this should be highlighted on their website. Our rooms had views of the beautiful Lapad Bay but the windows were small and in the corner, so we had to stretch to admire the view. But at least we still had a very nice view. So overall, a thumbs up from two single girls from Ireland. :-)

“Excellent service”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 27 September 2011

Stayed here for a week as part of a package with 'Newmarket holidays'.Excellent location, five mins to the beach, bars, shops, etc. We had four tours included (Bosnia,Montenegro,Dubrovnik and the Elaphite Islands ) but you can book all these within the hotel with hotel pick-up and also just a minute away there are stalls selling the same tours. We also booked the Korcula island trip with a stop at Ston and wine/cherry brandy tasting, brilliant tour to a beautiful island ,would recommend this. The rooms in the hotel are small and I would definately recommend booking one with a sea view and balcony. They are spotlessly clean ,being cleaned every day.A nice pool on the first floor, some rooms on this floor would have direct access to this from their room. The food (buffet) is excellent,we were booked in for half board, there were at least five meat/fish dishes nightly plus at least three vegetarian options plus plentiful supply of veg and salad, soup and deserts. The menu changed nightly so always something new to try with many local specialities.Breakfast was plentiful with a good choice. You can eat inside or outside on the lovely terrace. The service of the staff was fantastic, nothing was too much trouble and they need to be commended on this.Buses to Dubrovnik stop outside the hotel, approx 15-20 mins journey into the old city, return tickets £2.50 and can be purchased in hotel or on bus. There are beautiful walks both sides of Lapad bay, very scenic. The main harbour is a 15 minute walk and has open air market. This is the main harbour for Dubrovnik so plenty of cruise ships arriving, check before you go to Dubrovnik if there are any in as the town gets packed the days they dock or go there after about 2.30pm WHEN THE SHIP VISITORS HAVE LEFT ! The cable car journey above Dubrovnik is spectacular ,would have loved to have had time to do this at night as well as late afternoon as runs until 10pm. Def.plan time to visit Mostar in Bosnia, Kotor and Budva in Montenegro, both trips about two hours from Lapad but so worth the experience.Lapad is a suitable destination for ALL age groups and the Croatian people are just lovely,so accommodating. We shall return one day !!

Room Tip: Choose room with balcony or direct access to Pool, rooms at back of hotel darker.

“Basic, convenient, staff very helpful”

We stayed one night. Rooms are basic, but clean, with air conditioned and tv. There is also a small swimming pool. The staff is extremely helpful and friendly. They helped us to recover our camera from a taxi in a very efficient way. Also, there is a bus stop (line 4) very near to access downtown in minutes. For low bugets, is very reccommendable.
