Actually I stayed at this place in February 2010 but the scroll down box wouldn't let me go back that far... I have just recommended the place to someone which reminded me I never put a review up and I promised I would!
We had a very nice stay at Hostel Begovic. The family who ran it were very hospitable, in fact Dennis even took us on a little trip up the the museum and he also picked us up and dropped us off for a small fee.
The place was warm, clean and comfortable, if a little bit rough around the edges (the usual thing you find in countries where there isn't such an insistence on saftey standards as there is in England like slightly dodgy plug sockets- nothing to be particularly afraid of!)
The kitchenette was alright... take your own bottle opener!
Bascially, we got what we expected- a perfectly adequate place, with amazing views as a bonus! Although do be aware there are a LOT of steep steps to climb in order to be rewarded with a hostel that has those views!!
I would like to go back to Croatia in peak season... one piece of advice I would give is don't travel between Sept - April if you want to do things like diving or excursions to the islands; everything is closed! If you do choose go off - peak make it a short break because there is enough to keep you occupied for about 3 days out of season. The advantage of off peak travelling is the place isn't spoiled by lobster red cruise ship revellers pillaging the towns! We actually quite enjoyed soaking up the culture with the locals although again not all of the shops were open. But there was enough.
Another piece of advice from two rather idiotic travellers- keep your door locked! We were so busy flirting with a vaguely attractive american guy that we forgot we hadn't locked the door and some weird old Russian guy got into our room and stole some money. It wasn't too bad though, and taught us a lesson! The owners were very concerned about this and I think if he hadn't left the next day they would have removed him.
