“Yugoslavian timewarp”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 11 January 2011

I last visited this area in 1966, and I suspect this hotel was built not much later. A concrete monolith. My heart sank when I saw my room, sharp green decor (also 60s but not really knowing retro style). Cold and slightly dank, and non-functioning aircon despite the fact it was unseasonably chilly. Curiously, as the bed was probably rather old it was quite comfy and as I hate hard "orthopedic" beds I slept better than expected. Because of its location in an hotel enclave, no street noise, though I was overlooking the pool which could have been noisy if the weather were good. The bathroom was largish but with a curiously narrow door that could prove a problem for some. A dangerous mended hairdryer, and my sister in a nearby room had one that fell apart in her hands!!!

Then we went to dinner. A feeding frenzy, dozens queuing up before the doors opened at 7pm as if they were refugees who hadn't eaten for days, rushing, with fixed looks, to each of the food stations as if their lives depended on it. This is, of course, a criticism of the clients rather than the hotel, but a word of warning for those who look forward to "fine dining". There is a very wide choice of food but very variable quality, Best to take your time and choose a small portion and be prepared to put it to one side (if you can find an empty space) and go back to the buffet - e.g. steak inedible but roast meats and freshly cooked fish could be quite good, and one night I had excellent olive risotto. Very poor pudding selection - dry cake and tastless fruit (in late September!). Try to bag a table in the conservatory as it is quieter. The staff were stolid and charmless (Yugoslavia in the 60s), especially as we didn't buy the overpriced bottles of wine. The breakfast was better, again a wide choice, less of a panic among the punters, but again take your time to taste and reject or go back for more. Poor coffee, but wide selection of teas. Try the beetroot juice - delicious.

The location is quite good if you can't afford to pay for an hotel close to the old city, but the rack rate is very high for the quality so try to make a deal. The bus system works well and is cheap. Try to get a room with a view over the channel and mountains. Be aware of the fact there is a shopping centre just behind the hotel with cafes and a supermarket for smuggled-to-room drinks (Riviera Travel didn't tell us about this).

“Good budget option if you want to relax as well as visit Dubrovnik”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 12 October 2010

If I could afford to I'd stay nearer to the old town of Dubrovnik in somewhere with a nice pool like the Bellevue or the Villa Argentina but since they're not in my price range this was a perfectly OK option considering that we wanted to relax in the sun a bit as well as visit the old town which is about 15 mins drive in a taxi (about 12 euro). You can easily get a bus too but I don't believe in wasting precious time on buses when I have only a couple of days. We stayed here twice either side of a business trip so experienced two rooms. On both occasions we were upgraded to sea view which was lovely. Rooms are a bit bright and plasticky but beds very comfortable and bathrooms spacious. Good showers and plentiful hot water. I was amused at the loo roll holder being placed across the bathroom well away from the loo though.

The building is a large concrete structure, not the prettiest but it works and the location is lovely with great views of both sea and land, actually nicer views in my opinion than closer to town. There is what looked like a nice beach nearby with a restaurant - it was all closed up as we went to look toward end of season on an overcast morning. You can also rent beds for about 3 euro at the stoney beach of the Hotel President next door (part of the same chain as the Argosy but a higher star rating and more expensive). Gardens and pool area in The Argosy very pleasant though I hated the music blaring from the poolside bar (music also next door at President but you can get away from it). This music would be more than just an annoyance if you had a sea view room in this part of the hotel.

I also disliked the restaurant for breakfast. It's huge and noisy, more like a factory canteen. There were chefs cooking eggs to order. The selection of pastries was poor and croissants were stodgy. Cereals were those awful ones you only ever see in three star hotels. Fruit was mostly tinned or tinned mixed with a little fresh which was deeply disappointing especially as they had melons and pineapples for display purposes on the shelf above. It was possible to buy some fresh orange juice for about 3 euro for a small glass. Coffee was fairly good when you could get a pot of it. We sat on the terrace outside and staff made it clear that they didn't want to go out there but also made it difficult for us to get coffee to bring out there ourselves. Service in the restaurant at breakfast was poor. Reception was mixed - two fantastic staff members but mediocre service from the rest.

Would I recommend here? Yes if budget is limiting you then I think it's a pretty good choice but be prepared for a a fairly budget experience. I certainly wouldn't stay here more than three or four days.

“wonderful hotel/holiday”

we have just returned from a weeks holiday. We can fully recommend this hotel. The accomadation was spotless, was of agood standard with lovely grounds, with superb views of the sea and islands. Food was of a high standard with a selection of meats and fish cooked by the chefs on the hot plate at dinner, and breakfast was also of high standard again foods cooked fresh and also information how healthy the food was with fat content etc. Staff were very friendly Local bus into Dubrovnik stopped 5 mins from hotel. Would certainly revisit at some time. Croatia is well worth a visit with lovely scenery.

“Good Hotel, not so good restaurant”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 4 October 2010

The hotel is rather removed from the city centre, but is well served by No 6 bus from the entrance to the old town, which terminates very close to the hotel, so seats are generally available.

The room was adequate in size and comfort, with a rather basic, but acceptable, bathroom.

The rack rate is about 3 times the cost of a room booked through eg Booking.com, and would be poor value if paying the full price.

Where we thought the hotel spoiled itself was its restaurant, a cavernous room serving only buffet food which, though reasonably varied, was what I would describe as bog-standard British pub quality, served in a works canteen atmosphere The noise level was extremely high, with upwards of 550 diners at any one time - not the sort of place to go to for a quiet or romantic meal.

“Better than expected”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 1 October 2010

Having read previous reviews I was prepared for a bit of a 'holiday camp' atmosphere at ths hotel but in the end we were pleasantly surprised.
We were with a Riviera group and had travelled down from the central Dalmation coastline after a longlish journey via Mostar in Bosnia. We arrived at the hotel at the same time as two other coaches and when we all arrived in the restaurant at the same time I thought my worst fears were about to be realised! It was so noisy!
However, after that first evening all was well. It is a large restaurant so don't expect an 'intimate atmosphere' but try and get a table in the conservatory area overlooking the sea where you will find it much quieter and with a lovely view. There was a very good choice of foods to cater for those from different countries. Mostly reasonably well cooked - and if you didn't like your initial choice you could always get something else. Breakfasts were very good - have a substantial one and set yourself up for the day! This was also one of the few hotels abroad that actually seemed to be able to cook bacon!

The bedrooms were a good size, the beds were comfortable and the rooms were kept very clean by the room staff. In our room the handle of the hairdryer did get very hot so be wary. Our balcony view was quite good - looking over the roofs to the estuary one way and towards the bridge and harbour the other way. The views in the early morning light were superb
There is a large shopping mall, with bars and bistros as well as shops, attached to the hotel - which also serves other hotels in the complex - but I didn't find this until the last evening.
The local bus service (number 6) into Dubrovnik departs from, and returns to, the road right in front of the hotel. The bus takes you to the Pile Gate and the centre of Dubrovnik. Tickets are sold in the shop in the hotel lobby which is cheaper than buying them on the bus, and cost less than £1 for the 15/20 minute journey.
Don't miss the walk around the walls of the town and see the real Dubrovnik. This really is one of the most beautiful places I have been to.
For a really pleasant day/afternoon take the boat (from the old harbour) to the small botanical island of Lokrum. This15 minute boat trip costs less than a fiver for a return ticket. There is a cafe as you step off the boat but there is also a restaurant 10 minutes away at the old monastry. Enjoy the walks in the gardens, or even to the old tower if you are energetic, or just amble along the coastline to the 'Dead Sea' - an inland warm fresh water lake where you can swim.
