I last visited this area in 1966, and I suspect this hotel was built not much later. A concrete monolith. My heart sank when I saw my room, sharp green decor (also 60s but not really knowing retro style). Cold and slightly dank, and non-functioning aircon despite the fact it was unseasonably chilly. Curiously, as the bed was probably rather old it was quite comfy and as I hate hard "orthopedic" beds I slept better than expected. Because of its location in an hotel enclave, no street noise, though I was overlooking the pool which could have been noisy if the weather were good. The bathroom was largish but with a curiously narrow door that could prove a problem for some. A dangerous mended hairdryer, and my sister in a nearby room had one that fell apart in her hands!!!
Then we went to dinner. A feeding frenzy, dozens queuing up before the doors opened at 7pm as if they were refugees who hadn't eaten for days, rushing, with fixed looks, to each of the food stations as if their lives depended on it. This is, of course, a criticism of the clients rather than the hotel, but a word of warning for those who look forward to "fine dining". There is a very wide choice of food but very variable quality, Best to take your time and choose a small portion and be prepared to put it to one side (if you can find an empty space) and go back to the buffet - e.g. steak inedible but roast meats and freshly cooked fish could be quite good, and one night I had excellent olive risotto. Very poor pudding selection - dry cake and tastless fruit (in late September!). Try to bag a table in the conservatory as it is quieter. The staff were stolid and charmless (Yugoslavia in the 60s), especially as we didn't buy the overpriced bottles of wine. The breakfast was better, again a wide choice, less of a panic among the punters, but again take your time to taste and reject or go back for more. Poor coffee, but wide selection of teas. Try the beetroot juice - delicious.
The location is quite good if you can't afford to pay for an hotel close to the old city, but the rack rate is very high for the quality so try to make a deal. The bus system works well and is cheap. Try to get a room with a view over the channel and mountains. Be aware of the fact there is a shopping centre just behind the hotel with cafes and a supermarket for smuggled-to-room drinks (Riviera Travel didn't tell us about this).
