“Why stay elsewhere?”

Marc is SO accommodating. When our airplane was fogged in in Zagreb on the date of arrival, for Marc that was no problem. He simply shifted the dates. If you're going to see Dubrovnik thoroughly, it seems shame not to stay within the walls, and the place to stay is one of these four warm, well furnished apartments. And if you need anything, just ask Marc. You are about 100 meters from the front entrance to the Cathedral.

Room Tip: The two upstairs apartments seem slightly larger.

“A very fine place to stay in Dubrovnik”

Marc van Bloemen and his wife run Karmen Apartments in the heart of the old town in Dubrovnik. Our apartment was well-appointed and had all the amenities a traveler needs, including an outside laundry rope to hang your clothes, should you need it! Old town Dubrovnik is charming and beautiful and Marc was most accommodating and helpful throughout our stay. Check to see how the renovations in the next building are coming along and how that might interfere with your stay. It did not bother us as no work was accomplished during our visit, but we could not use the balcony of our apartment. Marc took this into consideration as he finalized our account.

“Excellent Value, Excellent Location”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 28 November 2011

When our ferry from Italy got cancelled, Marc was incredibly accommodating and flexible. He made it work so that we could extend our stay -- as long as we were OK moving in between rooms. So we stayed in 3 of the 4 apartments during our trip:

Apartment 4: Small room on the ground floor with a double bed, tiny kitchen, and bathroom. Seemed like an ideal place for a solo traveler. For two of us, it worked fine for one night, but might have felt cramped if we had a longer stay. Had a great AC -- all of the apartments had air-conditioning that worked really well, which we really appreciated in the heat of August!

Apartment 3: Significantly larger than Apartment 4, Apartment 3 was also on the ground floor. We had no trouble with street noise (it's all pedestrian streets, just off the beaten tourist path) but there is a restaurant (Ribar) right below. Three backpackers shared this room the night before we moved in, so I believe the couch must fold-out to add an extra bed.

Apartment 2: By far the largest apartment we stayed in, Apartment 2 was setup with an open bedroom/kitchen and then a separate small living room (again with a couch that may have been a fold out, I'm not sure). We appreciated having that extra space for our luggage -- made getting ready in the mornings much easier! Apartment 2 also had a nice balcony; not much of a view, but gave us a great breeze.

Best thing about Karmen Apartments -- aside from the price -- is their location. They're situated just one street behind the port, so you've got easy access (2-3 min walk) to lots of restaurants and the daytrip boats, but you're off the "main drag" so there aren't hordes of other tourists underneath your windows. Plus, the entrance to the city walls is just a block away, so it's very easy to be one of the first up to beat the queue.

Very good stay!

Room Tip: Apartment 2 gives you some extra space & privacy, but Apartment 4 is great for solo travelers.

“Super stay.”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 15 November 2011

This was one of the best places we stayed in during 5 weeks in Europe. We were not able to book Apt #1 but if you can it has a view of the harbor. The owner was, Marc was the very best we met on our trip. He was very helpful in all things. Where to eat, what to see. We were there for 4 night prior to a ferry to Italy. Quiet at night and fully equipped kitchen. Many good places to eat and prices were reasonable for Americans. Stay here if you can.

“Parking an issue”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 10 November 2011

We stayed 2 nights in Apt 3 and 2 nights in Apt 4; both apts were interestingly decorated and considering the smallness of Apt 4 it was extremely functional. We did have a noisy stay as the building behind was scaffolded and in the process of being renovated. We could not use the small balcony in Apt 3 due to dust and debris and workmen! Marc was more than willing to negotiate our room rate due to this inconvenience. Also, we had no WiFi connections which was a disappointment and parking is definitely an issue if you come by car. The lot is at the top of the hill and very expensive. Marc did not seem too aware of parking costs. It is possible to prepay and save on an extended stay. (We discovered this after the fact) It was convenient and fun being in the Old Town to wander the streets and walk the wall. Dinner at Taj Mahal was delicious and Nishta.
Consider staying outside the walls in a place with parking if you have a car.

Room Tip: Lower apts have no view and seem a bit dark.
