My fiancee and I just came back from a holiday to Hvar with two stop-over nights in the Art Hotel, Split. The hotel claims to be a 4 star but admittedly, I see no evidence to support this claim. Although we did not realise it, we had actually booked our two separate stays in their extra 3 star accommodation at the back of the hotel - what they called the Dependansa so DO CHECK THIS BEFORE YOU GO. Although it was a bit of a drag getting there - there are no lifts just 1 set of stairs you need to drag you luggage up - and the building is quite stuffy, the rooms were perfectly acceptable, somewhere in between the UK's Travelodge and Premier Inn. They were clean and the bed was VERY comfy on both nights (we stayed at the beginning and end of our holiday so had different rooms.) However, you don't get toiletries, in fact during the first stay we didn't even get soap, My fiancee, who has stayed at Art before in the '4 star' rooms, mentioned that the only difference he could see with the rooms was that they had a few freebie toiletries, but that was it. So really, if they advertised themselves as a 3 star like they should do then they might save disappointment.
The staff were friendly and helpful, with the exception of one woman who seems to have previously been mentioned. Unfortunately I didn't catch her name but, thankfully, we only had to deal with her once. She was quite rude. Otherwise, there was a lovely man who seemed to be on the desk more often than not. He recommended us a nice restaurant, spoke to us nicely, helped us out whenever he could and organised us a taxi at 7:45 am for the airport when we had only mentioned to him that we would be needing one when we checked in.
The breakfast was below par for their apparent '4 star' status. Not much choice and what there was seemed quite old and dry. We found something to nibble on though. NB if you don't fancy brekkie, there are a whole heap of bakeries around, most open 24 hour.
I wouldn't be too pessimistic about this hotel, it's not bad. It just raises people's expectations somewhat incorrectly. I'd definitely recommend it for what it is - a stop-over. Think Premier Inn. It's about a 15 min walk into town - nowt wrong with a bit of exercise.
