“Buried in Ancient History”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 6 February 2012

A very special place to stay, inside of the old palace walls. Be aware that the buildings are old and suffer from anything that might come with that ancient infrastructure. The room was pleasant and had a comfortable bed, TV, and an attached kitchen area. Between the windows of the bedroom and the kitchen the place airs out quite well. The location, of course is priceless. You are but 10 minutes from the train station and bus terminal and in the midst of all of the shops and sights that make the area special. Nearby are markets where you can shop and a bakery is just down one alley where you can get fresh bread. In fact, I just recall seeing a, I think it was a Konzum, just around a corner from the guesthouse. Because of the numbering system, the entrance was a little difficult to find, but look for the eye doctor or optometrist and walk in, up the stairs, and keep on climbing and you will see the doorbell. The excellent Lonely Planet review has a picture of the entrance, excactly opposite of what I show here. What really gives the place character is the lady of the house, Danica. She speaks excellent English and is a lovely fountain of information and will give you all of the tips and advice you need to make the visit a special and unforgettable one. Unclean - Bottom Sheet obviously not changed since last guest. Shower dirty and covered in last persons hair.
Fact we had to actually ask for towels (not too bad) and for sheets (never done this before)
Noisy
AND FINALLY! getting swore at and verbally abused by the owner on the last day. very aggressive and VERY uncomfortable :-(

“Tries hard but doesn't quite make it on all fronts”

The good:
Excellent location, within 30 seconds walk of Diocletian's Palace Basements, the "Riva" and many cafes and restaurants. 5 minutes walk from the ferry and bus terminals. Right in the heart of the 'old town'.
Very friendly owner/operator
Very reasonable rates
Linen provided
Very clean

The not-so-good:
Up 3 flights of stairs to the 'reception' area, then one or two more depending on which room you're in. The stairs to the top floor dorm are particularly precarious.
Linen = bottom sheet, pillowcase and blanket - not so practical for the height of summer.
No airconditioning in 2/3 rooms. The top floor room is airconditioned but does pretty much nothing until the sun goes down.
Terrace is accessible only through the top floor room - can be a bit uncomfortable.
Rooms are very small and hot, especially when filled to capacity.

Overall, would probably stay there again, but not in Summer!!
