“Great place to stay!!!!!!”

Very nice and neat hotel. I stayed there twice and would come back again. Rooms are clean and cozy. Front desk staff was very attentive and helpful when I needed information to get around the town. Wi-Fi is fast and FREE (not always the case in Europe). Location is convenient, the very center of Kharkov, and amazingly quite and safe. But the best of all is the food and service at the restaurant. It's a must if you are in Kharkov! Overall, an excellent price/value ratio. Would recommend this place to a friend.

“A gem”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 12 September 2010

I was pleasantly surprised by the location and condition of this hotel. It is a nice, clean modern hotel in the center of the city and easy walking distance to the major sights.
The staff spoke excellent English and was amazingly helpful. This is very rare in the former East-bloc countries by the way: customer service. So when I get some, I am always surprised...
They helped me with getting medicine at a nearby pharmacy (they wrote what I needed down in Russian and I took the note to the pharmacy).
I would definitely recommend. I spent maybe $100 a night for the room.

“Better than most.”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 21 June 2010

I've stayed at the Chichikov and Kharkov and certainly prefer this hotel by a long shot. 1st the good, off street parking, but it's small. I've stayed here a few times and there is always enough room for the car. Reception is always very polite, yes the English is very good. The Chichikov caters too much to smokers. When you enter the front door, you can turn righ to reception or turn left to the bar. Both areas allow smoking and no place has an exhaust fan. They could stop this - it would be better. Always specify non-smoking or smoking. For non-smokers the staff hasn't quite figured out that "open the window" is not an appropriate solution when offered a smoking room. ***ugh***. I have eaten at the restaurant 2x. It's OK. Typically-it's bright and lacks atmosphere. But, the Chichikov is really close to a number of nice places to eat, so don't feel obliged to stay in. Once in the room, the business class rooms are OK. Not large but large enough. The bathrooms are roomy and work well. The layout of the room is such that I always turn the TV table so it faces the bed. Yes, you can hook up you ripod to the TV if you bring your cables. I have not yet stayed at the Aurora. But I stayed at the Aurora in krivi-rig and it was pretty nice. I expect if the same Aurora philosophy and mgt style is in Kharkiv, the Chichikov has competition. Oh, almost forgot. The elevators are made for humans at the Chichikov. Compare to the monkey cages at Kharkov. Also, the button for the second floor is only a decoy. You have to go the reception and walk up the stairs to get to the restaurant. Not bad, just is what it is. Oh, and the mini-bar is stocked nicely and the bar let's you meander anywhere you want with your drink. The staff is cool. They have been well-trained.

“A nice clean hotel, great service, but not a "luxiourious" place to stay.”

Overall, The Chichikov Hotel is a "nice" hotel; but it is not the 4-star category hotel I was expecting. I like the hotel fine and I was happy (semi-happy) with my stay; but from the pictures and reviews from others, well, frankly, I was disappointed.

The Chichikov has many plus features. It is centrally located in Kharkov, the lobby, restaurant, bar and other common areas are upscale (4 star level), and the service and friendliness of the staff was excellent (5 star level). However, what I found disappointing were the rooms (which, frankly, is why I stay in a hotel) and the overall “stay” experience at the Chichikov.

The rooms: all the rooms are small (single, double, Jr. Suite…true, I didn’t stay in a suite, but you’ll have the pay the extra $100 per night to write that review), the bathrooms were average (small like the rooms with no frills), and the beds (it didn’t matter how much you spent) were at best average (you know, low to the ground, not hard, not soft, but not perfect either….kind of Holiday Innish if you ask me). And the furniture, lighting and usual “amenities” in the room, though very clean, could all have been updated… say about 10-15 years. Oh, and two pet peeves – Internet and towels. While I do not need new towels, I do like my towels to be at least semi-plush (you know, some softness left). Unfortunately, the towels at the Chichikov were the same age as the furniture and felt like something between a kitchen handi-wipe and sandpaper. Fine if you are cleaning your sink or refinishing your furniture, but rather rough on the skin, even at my age. And if you going to advertise “Wi-Fi Internet,” then please have the courtesy to have it working in at least half of the rooms. I became friends with several guests as we sat in the lobby bar each morning, drinking coffee and logging onto the Internet. We all talked and they did not have service in their rooms either.

So, what are my overall thoughts? Well, if you are looking for, and are accustomed to, an overall 4 or 5 star rated hotel, I think you will be disappointed with the Chichikov Hotel. But, if great service, central location, a nice common area, and a clean, no-frills room is your thing, you’ll be just fine. Just don’t forget to bring your own towels.

This is my first review of a hotel for TripAdvisor; I hope it was helpful.
