Overall, The Chichikov Hotel is a "nice" hotel; but it is not the 4-star category hotel I was expecting. I like the hotel fine and I was happy (semi-happy) with my stay; but from the pictures and reviews from others, well, frankly, I was disappointed.
The Chichikov has many plus features. It is centrally located in Kharkov, the lobby, restaurant, bar and other common areas are upscale (4 star level), and the service and friendliness of the staff was excellent (5 star level). However, what I found disappointing were the rooms (which, frankly, is why I stay in a hotel) and the overall “stay” experience at the Chichikov.
The rooms: all the rooms are small (single, double, Jr. Suite…true, I didn’t stay in a suite, but you’ll have the pay the extra $100 per night to write that review), the bathrooms were average (small like the rooms with no frills), and the beds (it didn’t matter how much you spent) were at best average (you know, low to the ground, not hard, not soft, but not perfect either….kind of Holiday Innish if you ask me). And the furniture, lighting and usual “amenities” in the room, though very clean, could all have been updated… say about 10-15 years. Oh, and two pet peeves – Internet and towels. While I do not need new towels, I do like my towels to be at least semi-plush (you know, some softness left). Unfortunately, the towels at the Chichikov were the same age as the furniture and felt like something between a kitchen handi-wipe and sandpaper. Fine if you are cleaning your sink or refinishing your furniture, but rather rough on the skin, even at my age. And if you going to advertise “Wi-Fi Internet,” then please have the courtesy to have it working in at least half of the rooms. I became friends with several guests as we sat in the lobby bar each morning, drinking coffee and logging onto the Internet. We all talked and they did not have service in their rooms either.
So, what are my overall thoughts? Well, if you are looking for, and are accustomed to, an overall 4 or 5 star rated hotel, I think you will be disappointed with the Chichikov Hotel. But, if great service, central location, a nice common area, and a clean, no-frills room is your thing, you’ll be just fine. Just don’t forget to bring your own towels.
