“Over-priced wannabee western hotel”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 21 October 2011

Made the mistake of arriving in Kharkov without a booking. I came from a village with no Internet access. Turned up to my first choice Chichkov Hotel but they were booked out. They called the Kharkov hotel for me and quoted 1359 UAH which is way overpriced. The room was spacious, but very, very tacky. You could see how they wanted to impress their Soviet clients, but it fell way short by western standards. Only a 3 star hotel at best. Hated the decor, with Marilyn Monroe painting. Only good thing about the hotel was the location. Nice and close to the main square. Would not stay here again.

Room Tip: book first, and get a better rate somewhere else

“One of the worst”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed 20 October 2011

I've just checked out of this hotel after 2 nights on business. I was on the 14th floor in a very basic room, not even provided with tea/coffee making facilities in the room which I've never experienced before. The vertical blind had slats missing so all night I could see the golden Arches of Macdonalds down the street, luckily being so high up in the hotel, I don't think I was overlooked! The hotel is situated on a busy junction where traffic only realy dies down for a few hours in the middle of the night. The corridors are not carpeted so you hear every footstep quite amplified as they pass your room so if you want a restful stay, this isn't the hotel for you. The reception area is quite impressive and staff do their best to understand you and attempt friendliness. I was told the restaurant was on the 8th floor, I also clarified this. Food and service in this restaurant is extremely basic too. It wasn't until I checked out this morning that I saw a restaurant on the ground floor which looked much more inviting. Unfortunately as I opted out of breakfast this morning (after being served cucumber and salami for breakfast yesterday), I didn't have time to check the other restaurant out - shame I wasn't told about it! Am glad to be sat at the airport as I write this heading home to civilisation.

“Beware of your belongings”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 30 June 2010

I have stayed in the hotel for 3 nights, everything was reasonably fine apart from the fact that my jewellery was missing at the end of the stay. Unfortunately I realised it after my departure and my complaint to the hotel was not accepted. Apparently it was my mistake that I was not careful enough and that I did not expect to happen something like that in a four star hotel. Have a nice stay there but beware carefully your belongings.

“Kharkiv Hotel. Slightly bizarre.”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 21 June 2010

I have stayed at 2 hotels in Kharkiv. This one and the ChiChiKov. Comparing between each hotel, I would recommend the ChiChiKov. Not that the Kharkiv is bad. But they haven't upgraded to true international standards and still have many old Soviet styles. reception is Russian speaking only. No one spoke English. maybe they can, but they didn't. I stayed in a Business Class room that featured a really weird bizarre color, a fax machine from the 1990's, a VCR machine and a mini-fridge with nothing inside. The airconditioning works, but leave it on when you leave so it can catch up.Getting to the room meant walking down a hallway that in the middle had 3 stairs. So, beware of that. We didn't eat at any restaurants, but they are bright. Very bright. The good thing is that the hotel is 50m from the main square and there are many really good restaurants within 10-15 minutes walk. If you have the choice, check for availability at the Chichikov 1st.
