The hotel is in a great location, and has a gorgeous facade and lobby, but the charms stop there.
Most of the decently priced rooms are located, as others have mentioned, up three floors (as far as the elevator goes), and then a few minutes walk down a long corridor and up another set of steps. There's a view of a brick wall and ugly courtyard. Room was small and relatively clean (after we killed an enormous fly). But if you're there in summer, it will definitely be unpleasant with the air conditioning, which needs upgraded. The air conditioner they have is an antique and is more for aesthetics than actually cooling the room.
Service was typically uncaring Communist style. We arrived early in the morning, and although the room was free, the attendant offered us check-in only if we paid a halfday rate. I was shocked. Normally at supposedly NICE hotels, they offer you early check-in as a courtesy. Especially considering my wife is 6 months pregnant (ie, obviously pregnant), I was surprised the staff (a woman no less!) refused us this courtesy.
Next, we decided just to leave our bags and eat breakfast before leaving. We asked her what time it was open and she said 7AM, but did not mention the price, so we assumed it would either be 1) included in our room 2) or cheap as is most everything in Ukraine.
To start, the buffet was mediocre. Things were lukewarm or outright cold. No fresh fruit, just fruit from a can. One type of bread, one type of yogurt, powdered eggs, but we let it slide, because again, we thought it was either included or cheap.... So we were shocked when the bill came and it was 560 hryvnia (about $70). This price for this quality would be outrageous even in NYC. We were shocked.
The only other reason, we booked the hotel was the pool, and when we finally could check in, we were informed there was a pool, but there was no water in it. The staff, again, seemed to smirk to themselves.
If you stay here, consider yourself warned. Decent location and lobby/facade, but that's all. Go to the Mozart or another close and newer place.
