“Superb retreat....”

We managed to find the Posada after some hunting on tripadvisor for a base in Antigua. We were expecting family members to visit us over the course of three weeks, so we wanted somewhere with a 'wow' factor! We contacted Carmen and Carlos beforehand and we managed to secure an excellent deal for all three rooms in the off-season. We found the Posada's location secure (within a gated driveway) and quiet- its about 15-20min from the central square. On entering the Posada you are greeted by a beautiful, serene entrance and mature garden. There are climbers and an abundance of flowers as well as numerous hummingbirds flying about the place! The pool is gorgeous- very long, so perfect as a lap-pool (although non-heated and a little nippy on a cloudy day!). Two rooms exist downstairs bridged by an open living area used by the two rooms. The decor is very classic and sophisticated and the facilities are excellent (tea/coffee making, hot water power showers, adequate storage space, alarm clock, t.v with 50+ channels and an abundance of 'vogue/vanity fair/times' magazines!). We had continental breakfasts daily with fresh fruit (expertly arranged and decorated!), hot muffins, fresh juice, tea/coffee and sweet breads. You can ask for a full breakfast and dinners which are no trouble for the owners (dinner approx $20 each for three courses), but we tended to have simple lunches made by ourselves using the mini-kitchen. Rooms were cleaned and the place was maintained to a high level throughout our stay. The posada only has three rooms (one further room upstairs overlooking the terrace with its own living room) so the place is incredibly quiet and intimate- a haven from the hectic Antiguan crowds! We also had airport pick-ups arranged by Carlos (5 to be exact!) all at unsociable hours, but all performed by him without so much as an early morning yawn!!
Overall, if you are looking for a beautifully decorated, serene environment in which to enjoy Guatemala and its colonnial city, Antigua then this is the place!

“Hidden Gem”

Once we arrived in Guatemala, Posada el Ensueno was a little hard to find, even though we gave our shuttle driver a map of its location. It's hidden inside a secluded street that is shut off by gates from the general traffic. But after driving around for half an hour, we did finally find it.

We were greeted by Carlos who was very friendly and even drove us to town, showing us the different sites and restaurants we could visit. From the outside, it doesn't look like much, but inside it looks very charming with the colonial style decor and all the creeping plants and flowers.

The rooms were a little dark, as is the case with colonial architecture which doesn't allow for much light to get in. But the beds had clean sheets, the bathroom and shower were also clean, no mold or mildew. No musty smells. The carpets on the ground were a little old, from people walking on them with their shoes on.

The area is very tranquil and quiet, great for relaxing or reading a book on one of the chairs by the pool. It's a very interesting and charming place. There are some stairs that look like a hidden tunnel which bring you to the terrace, where there are more plants, flowers and places to relax.

The breakfast was the best. Very delicious and more than you would expect. We had scrambled eggs with potatoes and ham, fruits, pancakes, toast. It was great, and well presented.

Carlos was the nicest person, very accommodating and even let us use his internet connection in his office to check our mail at no extra cost. Another thing I wanted to mention is that Posada is about a 15-minute walk from the center of town, but we never felt unsafe in our walks. I would definitely recommend this place because the service, the breakfast and the charm is excellent.

“Ditto as to the other two reviews.”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 22 January 2008

Today, I received a question from a Trip Advisor member about the Posada El Ensueno. I was delighted to inform her of the most wonderful place we stayed in Antigua. The two reviews that have been posted are so true. I don't think I can add any additional information other than it was the nicest place we have ever stayed and such personal touches! It is "Tops" in my book.

  • Liked — The quietness of the property and the lovely atmosphere and personal attention.
  • Disliked — I can not think of a thing. It was great!!!!

“Loved this charming posada”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 26 November 2007

We just returned from a memorable stay at Posada El Ensueno. Our group of 10 (adults & children) reserved all three suites. One evening, we had another 8 guests, including lots of children, visit there to celebrate a birthday. Carmen, our hostess, had made the cake! When we were too tired to go out for dinner on Thanksgiving night, Carmen threw together turkey & dressing sandwiches for our group, even pumpkin pie for dessert. The Posada is a little distance (maybe 8 blocks) from the town center which made for very quiet evenings; just what we wanted (no roosters to wake us up!). The common lounge areas around the pool include several sitting areas surrounded by foliage, pool lounge chairs, a kitchenette ( frig, microwave), books/magazines. Everything is so elegantly & tastfully decorated. In the evenings, the area is alighted with candles and sooooo comfortable, it was hard to leave. In the morning, the coffee pot was started as soon as anyone emerged from their room. Breakfast was a plate of 5 different fruits, freshly squeezed OJ, yummy french toast with ham or bacon. In the evening, there was always an nice Chile wine available for the asking. The suites provide robes, individual TVs, bottle water, very nice decor. We didn't feel we were missing a thing by not staying at the Santo Domingo Hotel! Carmen is an accomplished artist (her paintings are all around), a gourmet cook and wonderful hostess. She arranged for our driver to the airport for a very early flight and still prepared a quiche for us at 5:45 AM! . We loved this bed & breakfast and will return!

  • Liked — Atmosphere & charm
  • Disliked — Can't think of a thing I didn't love!

“Loved Posada El Ensueno - Charming B&B Inn in Antigua, Guatemala”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 11 September 2007

We just returned from an amazing 5 days in Antigua, Guatemala. Part of what made our stay so incredible was Posada El Ensueno. Not only is this luxury 3-suite B&B inn a beautiful oasis in and of itself, but the owner (Carmen) made every effort to have our stay be more than just memorable, but extraordinary. She and her staff went above and beyond to cater to our every need, from arranging for transport (Carmen picked us up at GUA and arranged for private transport to take us on some of our excursions) to helping us find specific things we wanted to buy to telling us stories about Antigua from local politics to the weather. On top of a lovely breakfast each morning, one night Carmen made us an elegant and romantic dinner (we paid extra for that request) ... and with her 30+ years in the restaurant/hospitality industry, the dinner was amazing. We stayed in the "Terrace Suite" ... with views of the volcanoes and a lot of privacy, this suite had a good balance between lovely touches (chocolates on the pillows each night, traditional art decorations) with modern conveniences (the Posada was built fairly recently, although it goes right with the incredibly architecture and colors of Antigua) ... including a refrigerator, TV, spacious bathroom, bedroom and living space. The only "drawback" (and I say that mildly) is that the Posada is located 10 blocks from the center of town. We found the 15 minute walk lovely ... along cobble stone streets and finding wonderful nooks of ruins and courtyards along the way ... and a cab back in the evenings is less than $3. We loved the quiet and tucked away feeling of the place, but if you are looking to be right in the hustle and bustle of it all, the relaxing and lovely Posada El Ensueno may not be for you. For us, it was exactly what we wanted!

  • Liked — The owner and staff and the lovely facilities
  • Disliked — I can't think of a thing I didn't like!
