“My home away from home in Latin America”

I have returned to The Cloister five times now, and when I leave, I immediately begin
making my plans to return. The peace, tranquility and bird songs in the garden and the soothing decor of the rooms never fail to rejuvenate me and mend my tired spirit. The staff are some of the kindest people I have met in Guatemala and Barbara is a lovely, unobtrusive hostess in her beautiful home. Each time I visit, I stay just a little bit longer.
I rate The Cloister as best of the best.

“Our Family's home during our wedding!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 5 May 2011

Our wedding planner encouraged us to book with Barbara (the owner) early on and it was the most stress-free part of our wedding. What a blessing!

We stayed in the suite far in the back and never heard a SINGLE noise from outside or within the Cloister. We lit a fire every night which was expertly built and incredibly romantic.

A dozen or so family and friends stayed in the rooms surrounding the courtyard as well and everyone agreed that it was simple luxury. The staff was incredibly attentive without hovering. We were always helped with a genuine smile.

The courtyard was lush with vegetation and birds. The rooms were clean and furnished with antiques...if you are looking for sharp-cornered new furniture and glossy finishes, this place will disappoint. If you appreciate the comfort of a place that feels lived in and well-cared for and like "home" then this is just right! The one thing that is usually missing in places like that, though...is the bathrooms. The bathrooms in The Cloisters are very clean without reeking of bleach. Whew!

The location of The Cloister is absolutely stunning, right under the Arco de Santa Catalina.

Lastly, the best part of our stay was Barbara, the owner. We were sad not to have had more time with her. Her grace and willingness to allow us to mingle with her incredible life will NEVER be forgotten. She was an integral part to the little paradise we had as our family's home base.

“The Gem of Antigua”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 21 December 2010

My husband and I are repeat visitors to Antigua we have lost count of how many times we have returned. The Cloister is our favorite hotel because it is a gracious hotel. The impeccable staff conducts themselves as perfect host. Each time we return to the Cloister it is like returning home. It is a comfort to the eyes, the interior is a piece of art work you can live in.

“A perfect peaceful and beautiful oasis that evokes serenity.”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 7 August 2010

My husband and I have stayed at The Cloister on three different occasions and we never tire of enjoying the atmosphere of this beautiful property. The rooms are spacious, clean and attractive, each one different from the other. Your are not at a hotel but, rather, you are a guest at the beautiful home of a delightful friend.
The "tipico" breakfast is delicious, prepared at your request and can be served in the monastic atmosphere of the comfortable dining room (in winter, complete with lit fireplace, as can be the bedrooms).
The central location of the hotel in Antigua is ideal for walking tours of the city.
The church bells are not a bother, but are reminiscent of a time past that one is again able to experience in this delightful city.
We've stayed at other hotels in Antigua in the past, but now always return to The Cloister.

“Not quiet”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 31 May 2010

My son and husband went and found me some Tyl PM so I could sleep. Lots of traffic noise. The church bells are odd, no rhyme or reason for number of chimes or when they play. Breakfast was simple cooked to order but nothing special. The rooms are beautiful, our 18 yo son had his own loft. We would often have some deli take-out to bring back and eat on the courtyard tables. Gorgeous plants. Colorful. Good home base to walk to everything.
