“Great value, Excellent Service”

This is our second visit to Entre Volcanes (last time was a year and a half ago). The rooms are simple and clean and the building has a lovely colonial character with an interior courtyard open to above and a garden area and safe enclosed parking area in the back where you can access your car easily if needed. They have a great, fresh traditional breakfast served until 10:30 and the cook prepares your eggs to order. We had black beans, platanos, fruit, scrambled eggs with onion and tomato, fresh bread and coffee with delicious 'tostadas', crispy cookies to dip in your coffee. The rooms are a little dark as the windows only open onto the interior courtyard, the bathrooms a little cramped, but there are lots of nice little touches: nice linens, a bench to put your suitcase on, large towels. The also have a pretty roof terrace on the fourth level with a view over central Antigua. The hotel is on the west side of central Antigua near the public market and is on a busy street so it is a bit noisy. We were on the third floor toward the back and the noise was not a problem at all. It is just a 4 or 5 block walk to the central park with lots of shops, restaurants, ruins and so on to pass along the way. A new addition from last visit, they now have wireless internet available and although we had to wait an hour or so for the owner to get back with the password, it was easy and reliable. The owner is very friendly and helpful and speaks perfect English and the rest of the staff make you feel more like you're visiting a distant relative than staying in a hotel. With an advertised price of $80 per night for a double, this hotel is a great deal in Antigua. Its not a luxury hotel with pool and room service, but I highly recommend it as a comfortable home base and excellent value.

Room Tip: There is more light on the third floor and it is more quite in the rear.

“Superb Service”

I am a little late with posting this review, but I just came across a small gift the proprietors gave us when we left and it reminded me to write a review. Hotel Entre Volcanes is a really cute hotel right in Antigua. My group of three was in and out over 10 days as we were mountain biking around Guatemala. We spent about 5 nights there in total. They were super helpful in holding our luggage while we went out on multiple day rides. The proprietors husband even lent us some tools to disassemble our bikes when we ran into some problems. I will say that sound travels pretty easily in the small hotel, but it really wasn't that big of an issue. The breakfast was great, the internet worked, and the staff was friendly: I left super happy with the hotel.

“Looks nice - until you need the bed or bathroom.”

I am well traveled in Central America and know what to expect when staying at a boutique hotel such as this in the region. Entre Volcanes was far below the standard I would expect at any well-reviewed location in or around Guatemala. The outward appearance is of a nice, quiet home/hotel conversion with a center courtyard - typical for the area. The room itself, however, left everything to be desired. Bathrooms are beyond small and both the toilet and sink are black porcelain. Why black, you ask? To hide any remaining fecal matter from the previous guest. The rooms lack both a fan and window screens leaving you with a hot, still room with an odor of Guatemalans past. The sheets were likely purchased down the calle at the local mercado and have not been washed since. Both my travel companion and I found bits and pieces in our beds - pubic hairs, food, sand - things you wouldn't find if the sheets had even been through a wash.

There are many, many other hotels in Antigua that are priced similarly and offer a cleaner and more hospitable place to wash the sun and heat off you at the end of a day of traveling. Try Posada de Don Rodrigo - that's where I went after leaving here in the middle of the night.

“I highly recomend this Hotel”

We stayed at Hotel Entre Volcanes for three nights. They were very helpful in all respects. The day we had to leave a friend in the States emailed us requesting a special type of coffee. We had trouble finding it. A member of the staff knew where to find it and made sure we had it in our hands before we had to leave for the airport. The Hotel is very clean and safe. There is someone at the desk 24/7. Plus breakfast is included.
