I stayed at Casa Madeleine for over a week in September 2011, while learning Spanish in Antigua, and then I returned for another couple of days when passing through Antigua later on. The bedrooms are quite small, but with fabulously comfortable beds and some have private balconies. Overall the hotel is intimate - more like living in a large house than a hotel - with a lovely terrace where breakfast is served, which is good especially the pancakes which are the best I've tasted in Central America (and I've eaten quite a few!).. The jacuzzi and other seating areas are also very pleasant and I enjoyed a good pedicure provided by the small onsite spa. The location was literally on the edge of the town, but as the centre is quite small it was easy to walk in or get a cheap tuk-tuk. It was a good residential area and so I did not feel worried about walking home alone in the dark until around 10pm even though the streets are deserted at that time.
The staff including the receptionists, Kathya, Perla and Carlos, were pleasant and helpful - they were flexible over the dates of my second booking and even took care of a pair of shoes I left by accident until I was able to collect them (in a mad dash en route to Managua). However, the staff could sometimes be vague, such as when I asked if they had a laundry facility they said they didn't and gave me unclear directions about getting my laundry done elsewhere. Yet I later discovered from another guest that their laundry had been done through the hotel. There was a sense that there was no manager or person in charge to sort out any problems. Except for this minor point, overall it was charming, secluded place to stay in a lovely city and I would recommend it.
