“Heaven On Earth”

I have to be honest and say I was admittedly uncertain about the Pensativo, simply because the photographs on the website made the hotel appear lackluster. As it turns out, the minute I stepped through the iron gate, I was blown away. This hotel is not only beautiful, it is intimate, perfectly maintained and the staff is professional but warm and inviting. The complimentary breakfast was delicious and not much tops the view from the dining area. My companion and I stayed for three nights in Room 2, located on the interior of the hotel and thereby sheltered from all street noise. The nightly rate we paid was $95 plus taxes.

The location is perfect and because it is smaller, you don't have the random grouping of tourists traipsing through (think Casa Santo Domingo). The pool area is elegant and comfortable, the beds and linens are divine and the landscaping is breathtaking.

I'm posting photographs to help support my review. I've stayed in Mandarin Orientals (DC, Miami), Ritz Carltons (Altanta, NYC) and Four Seasons (Maui). And I'd easily place this on that level. I mean, we had to leave early for an excursion (6am), and a gentleman delivered fresh coffee, sandwiches, bananas and bottled water to make sure we had sustenance. And he did it all with the warmest smile.

  • Liked — The overall feel of the hotel is what made the experience special.
  • Disliked — I really have no complaints that I can think of.

“quiet and restful”

as an alternative to casa santo domingo or porto hotel antigua, this is a great place. we stayed in a suite (number 4 is highly recommended since it is not on the street side, huge, sauna, livingroom, huge bed, excellent). my mother stayed in tiny room 8 because it was off the street - she switched from a much larger room to avoid street noise. no microwaves, refrigerators in the room, minibar, coffeemaker ... it's not what this place is about, but they will make coffee, etc at any time for you. breakfast is nice, and included. very personal. incredibly close to everything, much closer than santo domingo and hotel antigua is basically next door. nice pool, very good for children too. we have a 15 month old, and my wife is in a wheelchair - we did fine (although porto hotel antigua would be better in a couple respects - true kiddy pool and ramps for many of the steps, at least to get to the restaurant, not sure about rooms. for wheelchairs the casa santo domingo is NOT good).

“Relaxing in Antigua”

We stayed here for five nights with two other couples and it was a great pick for us. The location is central, the courtyard second to none, the staff friendly and helpful, and the rooms spacious. In particular, we really liked the sala, as it gave us a great meeting place for a drink before heading out for dinner.

The only thing that is stopping me from giving this hotel an excellent rating is that it is dated. I really felt like I was back in the late 1960's or early 1970's, as much of the decor is from that era. The pool chairs required a much need coat of paint.

As others have said, try and get one of the four suites away from the road to avoid the street noise. The hotel is not on a busy street, but it only takes one vehicle coming by late at night to wake you up. Our room was inside the courtyard, and we didn't hear a thing.

“Amazing inn”

Wow. This hotel is really amazing. My husband and I stayed here over Thanksgiving and had a wonderful time. Antigua is full of beautiful hotels so I really did my research before chosing this property. I was nervous because I had such high expectations based on the reviews that I was sure I would be a little disappointed. This was completely unfounded and the reviews were correct. If you are in Antigua, stay at this hotel. It was so small and private that we felt like we were the only guests even though the hotel was full. The staff was amazing and did everything possible to accomodate us and make us feel special. The grounds are beautiful and perfectly maintained. I really felt like I was in paradise every time I walked through the gates into the hotel gardens. This is the place to stay if you want to relax and really get away from stress and worry.

I can't say enough about this beautiful hotel and the wonderful people who work at it. My only hesitation is that if I say too much the next time we are in Antigua it will be booked! The hotel is located about six blocks from the town square so it is wonderfully located. The hotel is well maintained, the grounds are beautiful, the staff is always willing to lend a hand and the atmosphere is so peaceful. We will definately stay here again when we are lucky enough to return to beautiful Guatemala.
