“Mission Trip”

I took a team of 16 to Guatemala to work at Casa Angelina, an orphanage about 30 minutes from Antigua. We stayed at Posada Asjemenou for a whole week. We booked 8 rooms total at a cost of $35/night. I think you could say, "you get what you pay for." No one in our group had any bed bug bites. We did see ants, but they never bothered us. The lighting is low, but it's low everywhere we went in Antigua. We met the owner and enjoyed our visit with him one evening. He never talked the place up too much and simply stated that it was a fair price for the condition of the place. The rooms in the front part are nicer, that much we found out. Breakfast was included in the cost of the room, and it was good. The location is excellent. One major negative is that bell that rings often and even through the night. Asjemenou wouldn't be my first choice when I return to work at Casa Angelina, but if it's all that is available, I wouldn't mind staying their again. We usually stay at the de don Rodrigo, which is as good as it gets. It's not as bad as some of the comments left make it sound. I have 15 other people to back me up on that. However, they all agree, they rather stay at the de don Rodrigo the next time if it's available (or Villa Antigua, another place one of our teams stayed last year).

“A little worn out”

The Posada Asjemenou could use some repairs and updating. My room was on the scuzzy side, with a dank bathroom, torn window screens and flimsy curtains. The sheets and blankets were worn out and thin. I looked at several other rooms and they were all dark - mine was the least dark among them. Church bells rock you awake in the morning. The little garden cafe is not bad. Given how Antigua's many inns, I'd skip this one.

“Watch out for bed bugs!”
1 of 5 stars Reviewed 12 December 2006

We stayed at this hotel for our last night in Antigua and it was the worst mistake we made. We had an amazing time in Guatemala, including our days in Antigua, but ended on a terrible note at this place. Our room was a double with a private bathroom. It smelled terrible as if it was totally infested with mold. The walls were pealing off and the room felt very dirty and dingy. That was not the worst, however. We woke up the next morning with massive bites from what we can only assume were bed bugs since they only attacked our feet and lower legs. It was terrible. We are shocked that this hotel is even listed in any travel guide, let alone recommended as "clean and comfortable." I guess $35 won't get you much, but we certainly would have paid more to spare us the bed bugs experience. Stay away; there are plenty of other good options in the same good area of town.

“Great Location and Great Value”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 13 September 2005

The Posada Asjemenou has a beautiful courtyard restaurant and a welcoming atmosphere. It is located on the pedestrian street leading to the Arch at La Merced - a city landmark. Our room was far in the back (past another charming courtyard) down a somewhat dim hall - but we appreciated it's remoteness when the bars of Antigua got going on Saturday night!
The room spoke to Antigua's history with high ceilings, plaster walls, heavy wooden furniture and heavy double doors. Still, it had good conveniences like cable TV, hot (electric) shower, and plenty of space.
In low season, dinner (one choice) and breakfast (four choices) were included - making it a great deal for one on a budget.
