“Perfectly adequate”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 15 April 2009

Stayed here a couple of nights on our way around Guatemala and found it to be one of the better places in the budget range, lovely innercourtyard and good breakfast. For pricey Antigua it is has a very reasonable room rate and the rooms are more than satisfactory being simply furnished but large enough to swing a cat in. The location is excellent, just five minutes walk away from the Parque Central and just behind the Irish bar (but far enough behind to be quiet at night, try to get a room on the far side of the courtyard). Only real gripe is that the pizza they serve is expensive (but then if you go all the way to Guatemala you should eat something a bit more exotic than pizza, shouldn't you!).

“Could be the worst hotel I've ever stayed in...”
1 of 5 stars Reviewed 21 January 2009

This hotel is tied with a place in Mexico for the worst hotel I've ever patronized. We were a group of four, traveling in Guatemala last May, and while we had a fantastic trip overall, this place was the low point. We're in our 20s and all pretty adventurous, so we're not very picky about hotels. We just stayed there for one night, and we were leaving for Tikal very very early the next morning, so I think we only spent about 5 hours there altogether. But they were absolutely dreadful. The rooms were on the larger side, but filthy (even by Central American standards, and we are NOT clean freaks), the bathrooms were disgusting, and we all woke up with bed bug bites. But maybe worst of all, once things got going in the night club, the music was so loud that we might as well have been trying to sleep IN the club. It truly sounded like Michael Jackson was in our room serenading us.

We stayed at two other hotels in Antigua in the same price range, both of which were substantially nicer. After this experience, we started asking to see a room before we committed to staying somewhere (preferably the room we would be getting), and that worked well.

  • Liked — central location
  • Disliked — the room quality is POOR, and it's very noisy.

“Not a good place to stay”
1 of 5 stars Reviewed 13 August 2008

We got to this hotel throught the tourist representative in Guatemala city airport who recommended and booked it for us. When we arrived at the hotel we found out what a dump it is. The hotel is very old, the room was unclean and almost not lighted at all. There was only a small window that looked at nowhere. It was like sleeping in an unmaintained room in an old monastery.
The shower was not clean and ugly. We got bitten by bugs all the time. The breakfast was unsatisfying. The only good think we could say about this hotel is its good location, not far from Antigua´s central park. To conclude - don´t stay here!

“Mission Trip”

I took a team of 16 to Guatemala to work at Casa Angelina, an orphanage about 30 minutes from Antigua. We stayed at Posada Asjemenou for a whole week. We booked 8 rooms total at a cost of $35/night. I think you could say, "you get what you pay for." No one in our group had any bed bug bites. We did see ants, but they never bothered us. The lighting is low, but it's low everywhere we went in Antigua. We met the owner and enjoyed our visit with him one evening. He never talked the place up too much and simply stated that it was a fair price for the condition of the place. The rooms in the front part are nicer, that much we found out. Breakfast was included in the cost of the room, and it was good. The location is excellent. One major negative is that bell that rings often and even through the night. Asjemenou wouldn't be my first choice when I return to work at Casa Angelina, but if it's all that is available, I wouldn't mind staying their again. We usually stay at the de don Rodrigo, which is as good as it gets. It's not as bad as some of the comments left make it sound. I have 15 other people to back me up on that. However, they all agree, they rather stay at the de don Rodrigo the next time if it's available (or Villa Antigua, another place one of our teams stayed last year).

“A little worn out”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed 29 December 2006

The Posada Asjemenou could use some repairs and updating. My room was on the scuzzy side, with a dank bathroom, torn window screens and flimsy curtains. The sheets and blankets were worn out and thin. I looked at several other rooms and they were all dark - mine was the least dark among them. Church bells rock you awake in the morning. The little garden cafe is not bad. Given how Antigua's many inns, I'd skip this one.
