“Quiet and Secure”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 13 September 2011

I'm generally not the type that would stay in places like Antigua, but the New Year's celebration is not to be missed, nor is the San Jorge. About 2 blocks south of the square with a very picturesque view of the Volcan de Aqua, this place is built like a small presidio. I wanted to take home the wait staff. They came to the door with a smile before daybreak (if you like) with coffee so good I wanted to pour it all over me. The breakfast was excellent and with the surroundings of the somewhat hacienda style gardens, this place should be checked out by the traveler that wants the value you get out of your own home.

Room Tip: I liked the room in the north east corner. Spacious with a small outside breakfast nook next to the...

“good basic digs”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 17 August 2011

I stayed 2 nights at the Hotel San Jorge. Like all of Antigua, it looks like a fortress from the outside, but the door opens to a lovely garden and fountain-a welcomed respite from the cobblestones and pollution of the city. The complementary breakfast is fresh and more than adequate to get you on your way. The garden is a nice spot to read or catch some sun. The safe was not working in the first room I was assigned to, so I was switched to another, which was roomy and adequate. My only complaint was no hot water on the 3rd morning of my stay. When I inquired about this, I was told they were aware of it and were waiting for the repair man, but I was gone before knowing when and if he arrived. (Hot water seems to be hit and miss in more than one hotel I've stayed at in Antigua.)
In my experience, I have come to realize that when traveling in Guatemala, it is unrealistic to expect "perfect" if staying at one of the mid-range hotels ($60-$80/night), but, in my opinion, if you go much above that, you could risk losing the Guatemalan experience, since many of the high end hotels look/feel like many nameless good chain hotels in the US. Then again, if you're traveling in Guatemala, you're not going for "perfect" anyway. Bottom line when traveling in Guatemala-hang loose.

“World Vets in Antigua”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 5 March 2011

I led a World Vets (a non-profit spay/neuter/vaccination organization) trip to Panajachel and we stopped off for one night in Antigua. The group spent the night at the San Jorge Hotel and wandered around Antigua the following morning. While this hotel is not luxurious, the staff - especially Evelyn Herrera - were extremely helpful. The free breakfast of, juice, tea/coffee, fruit, toast, local jam, yogurt and homemade granola was plentiful and very tasty.
Spanish lessons can be arranged. This hotel is conveniently located near the primary square and within walking distance of all the major markets/shops.

“A hidden gem in Antigua - great hotel”

This is a superb hotel. It is in a quiet location but within a few minutes walk of the historic centre of the city. The rooms are spacious, there is a garden. Breakfast is good. The staff are cheerful, friendly and helpful.

I wanted to stay 9 nights but they couldn't accomodate me one night, but made arrangements on my behalf for that night.

It was my 2nd visit to Antigua, and should I return again, this is where I would stay.

Excellent service.

“Beautiful small hotel”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 19 August 2010

When I walked up to this hotel I thought, wow, where am I, but once they open the small door to let you in behind the wall, you find a nice old courtyard with a fountain in the middle. The staff is welcoming and accommodating. The rooms are small and sparse. Clean but not plush (the towels, for example, are basic). A lovely breakfast is served every day in the courtyard. Fresh fruit, granola, local coffee, toast and yogurt. The hotel is located jusst outside the central plaza of the city, which is great because it's quiet and around nearby are nice restaurants. If you're someone who is out clubbing until very late, take a cab back to the hotel, however.
For the money, this hotel is well worth it and I would go back.
