“Poor management”
1 of 5 stars Reviewed 4 April 2011

To see the public spaces in this hotel, you would think it quite nice. And it could be! Other than the fact that there was only one outlet (being used by a weak reading lamp), a broken flushing mechanism on the toilet and no cross ventilation in some of the rooms (absolutely necessary in a country where most hotels have neither heat nor air con), all of the problems that I saw could be corrected by better management.

Each person was allocated one threadbare towel, no glasses were provided, no bottled water (a suspect looking urn was in the lobby), and a very bad smell would leave after a day of airing (this could not be done in the rooms with no windows that could be securely left open).

Management issues were apparent at breakfast: three pancakes were allowed on Friday but only two on Saturday, when I asked for milk for my tea the answer was "no," the third day when I asked for yogurt which had been there the two days before, the answer was "no, just milk," when I tried to get a glass to take to my room, they wanted to know my room number. It would have been funny if we weren't so mad.

We had prepaid for three rooms through Elizabeth Bell. One of the rooms had to be changed twice and those people finally checked out due to filthy conditions. I must have had a different maid because my room was relatively clean however, together the bedside light and the overhead light were too weak to read by. We all wanted to leave but Elizabeth Bell turned the first couple away telling them that there was no way she could get them a refund. The second couple started telling her staff all the individual problems and they were promised a refund and given a beautiful room in another hotel. I think the squeaky wheel got the grease!

This hotel seems to cater to European tour groups who are only there one night. After everyone goes to bed, it is relatively quiet till about 6am when breakfast preparations start: staff noise, moving furniture, etc.

I would definitely not recommend staying here and specifically, do not prepay!

“Nice hotel in a central location”

We stayed here for two nights in February. The hotel is in a beautiful old 16th century building built around two nice courtyards and is less than two blocks from the central plaza in Antigua. In comparison with the nice building, the rooms are rather simple and basic - somewhat cell-like, though clean and with a nice bathroom and plenty of hot water. Our room was an interior room, so a little dark, but quiet - some people in our group said the exterior rooms were very noisy being above the street. A nice and ample breakfast was included with the room. There is a roof deck that is open during the day that has nice views across the city. I would recommend the hotel for its convenient location close to everything, and for character of the buidling.

“location is good but the rooms were very overpriced for what you get”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed 11 March 2010

We'd stayed in several hotels during our trip--from $30/night rooms to $100/night rooms, so we did have a good basis for comparison. This hotel seems to be big on the tour circuit, so the prices they charge were much higher than warranted. They charged $85/night for a double, which included breakfast. Given what we knew about rooms and about food in the area , it was probably worth about $50/night.

The up sides--it was in a good, central location and the rooms were very large--two double or queen size beds in each, and I believe most, if not all, of the rooms are inward facing, so less street noise. The downsides--the sheets, blankets, and bedspreads reeked (mold), and the rooms were pretty dark.

“Poor security, issues with attitude and trust of staff.”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed 15 February 2010

The staff was indifferent, avoidant and hostile following theft of personal items sitting right next to the desk clerk for a very short period of time. This obviously raises some suspicion of their involvement. The police stated that this same scenario has occurred at this particular hotel numerous times. The hotel was otherwise clean but noisy. With so many nice, affordable hotels in Antigua, this one is lucky to be in business.
