“a good place for the traveler on a budget”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 31 January 2012

This little place is really clean, gorgeous rooftop with views, and perfect for the traveler who doesn't plan to use the hotel for much more than a clean place to sleep. It's small and simple, with very nice staff who will help you book transport. The location is good, just 3 blocks off the Central Park in Antigua.

One thing to note when making the reservation, ask about prices and then ask if the prices are CHEAPER if using cash instead of credit card. For us, they charged $10 less if we paid with cash.

“It's cheap for a reason!”

People are really complaining about this hotel! I've stayed here and it is not that bad! let me start off by saying it is a budget hotel, and with budget, you simply cannot expect luxury. I'll tell you what you can expect through my personal experience:

My husband and I stayed here a couple of years back, since then, I've heard they underwent a 'makeover'...I don't know about that, but in my experience, we arrived and were politely received and attended, there's a small parking lot attached to the hotel, and that is much appreciated since many hotels don't include this service...hey, not all tourists come from abroad! Anyway, our room was on the top floor, it was small, but clean and comfortable. The bathroom was small as well, but it had hot water...that's all I ask for! and in front of the room was a little terrace, and the view was nice. Next morning we enjoyed the complimentary breakfast, a typical Guatemalan breakfast...there are a couple of options for it....and....overall, it was a pleasant stay.

I don't normally like to return to the same hotel when vacationing, since I like trying out different options all the time, but I can honestly say I would return here! so there!

“One step above a hostel”

Until las camelias, we've never left a hotel before the end of our stay. One hour after arriving, we grabs our bags and headed to another hotel.

This was our 8th trip to Guatemala, and we decided to try something new. We arrived at camelias about 2:30 P.M., and were greeted by a pleasant enough receptionist who gave us the key to our first floor room. The maid was finishing up mopping the floor, so we toured the hotel for a few minutes and returned. The room was tiny, with no closets or anywhere to hang clothes. It was so small that we couldn't open our bags. No windows gave us a stuffy feeling of being locked in with the smell of cleaning solvents, and a soaking wet floor. The room was cell like.

The door to the room was not secure, and seemed like anyone could open it with little force. There was no way that we were staying here. We were pretty tired from our flight, so I grabbed a taxi at the park, went back to the hotel to get our bags, and booked into another hotel.

The rate was US$50.00 per night. Anything more than $US 20.00 is way too much for this hotel. For the price, you can do way better than camelias in Antigua. It's one step above a hostel, only because you get a tiny private room with bath.

“Weekend at Camelias”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 28 July 2008

We had booked a night at the Santo Domingo (one of the best hotels in Latin America) but could only get one night so we booked at the Camelias for the two previous nights. What a surprise, the hotel was clean, the breakfast (included) was great, but most importantly all members of the staff went out of their way to make your stay fantastic. The important question always is would you stay there again and the answer is most definitely. By the way, did I say we had $200 extra to spend in Guatemala which goes a long, long way.
