My husband and I stayed at the Arbor Cottage for three nights as part of our honeymoon in June. It was our first time on Nantucket, and we thoroughly enjoyed ourselves.
The AC is managed by the clean, contemporary Veranda House just across the street. We checked in there (very friendly and helpful staff throughout our entire stay) and also got to meet the owner of the AC who lives in the downstairs portion of the three story house. The manager actually upgraded us to the mid-size room in the AC because a single lady offered to take the smaller room that we originally booked instead--very nice! There are only three rooms in the AC (2 on the second floor, 1 on the third), making it generally pretty quiet, although you do have to allow for the fact that it is an older house, so there will be some noise.
The AC has central, which air is awesome, as you don't have to deal with window-unit noise (I did not notice central air in all the VH rooms). There is a small nicely-decorated sitting room on the first floor with a mini-fridge and a place to put dirty coffee mugs, etc. They were painting the house while we were there, so that was a minor inconvenience at times, but really not a big deal at all. The house itself was in wonderful condition inside and out (I am a clean freak). The bed was comfy enough (nice linens), there was a flat screen TV, and the bathroom was updated, clean, light, and airy.
It was nice to be "attached" to a larger inn like the VH but to have the privacy of the AC. We relaxed on the verandas of the VH each afternoon with cookies and tea and enjoyed the breakfasts there each morning. The breakfasts were not large, but they were good quality, interesting, and tasty--we enjoyed each morning's offering. We also popped in to the VH a couple of the cooler evenings for another cup of tea--the manager was happy to show us where the hot water kettle was.
The location of the VH and AC was great--on a quiet lane but very convenient to walk to town (1-2 blocks). We absolutely loved our stay on Nantucket and are really looking forward to staying in the AC or VH for our next visit!
