“Terrible customer service”

I am in agreement with all the other reviews. I haven't even booked a stay and am struggling with their sub-par customer service! They are delayed in their responses to me about reservations (taking 4+ days to get back to me) and when I finally did hear back, they changed their policy on weekend stays entirely saying that there is a three night minimum when all along they have stuck with a two night minimum. Given the economic climate you would think that they want customers to come stay in their hotel and appreciate some business for no business. With the attitude and lack of service they show their potential customers, it's clear this is a failing business. I truly hope they fold and go under at this rate!

We are sorry about any delay that you might have incurred when trying to contact The Vanessa Noel Hotel. Since opening in 2002, we have always maintained a two-night minimum stay policy for weekends during the high season, as do most hotels on the island. As a courtesy to our guests this past summer, due to the horrible economic conditions brought on by the recession, we changed our minimum weekend stay requirements to two nights so that it might be more financially feasible for some to visit Nantucket. This is stated clearly in the enquiry form which is emailed or sent out to perspective guests. Of course, in the off-season or in the case of a last minute reservation, assuming there is room, we will accept stays of only one night. We are a thriving seasonal business who have enjoyed the loyalty of returning guests year after year and we hope that you will try us again the next time you visit Nantucket.

“Gyp Joint”

My husband and I live near NYC and were booked to stay here for a wedding. Unfortunately, just before the weekend our son, who has a congenital heart defect , had an emergency and went into the cardiac intensive care unit suffering from atrial fibrillation. Obviously we did not get to the wedding and despite my pleading letter, the hotel went ahead and charged us the full amount for a weekend in Nantucket while we were sitting in NYC in the hospital.
I am dumbfounded and devastated by the arrogance and lack of sensitivity. They refuse even to respond to me. Bpuchner@aol.com

Dear berkeleybird
Of course we were concerned and saddened to hear about the medical situation that your son experienced right before your trip to Nantucket. We are always very sympathetic to our guests and any extenuating circumstances that they may face. If you are unable to arrive on the date originally booked, we are always happy to extend a credit to you for a stay in our Hotel at a future date. However, this was not requested- only a monetary credit was requested. Our policies are clearly stated in the confirmation letter you received upon booking, it is not our policy to refund for a reservation cancelled at the last minute.
We always try, and would have gladly rebooked your hotel room at a more convenient time for you. When you plan your next trip to Nantucket we hope you call us again.

“Vacation Disaster --- Go Elsewhere”
1 of 5 stars Reviewed 28 December 2007

Booked the largest room but, alas, it was small, stark and sterile with a dark hole (no windows) of a marble bathroom. The only color in the all-white box of a room was the red No Smoking sticker on the boarded-up fireplace. No place to sit comfortably, unless you count a short outdoor furniture piece in this bleak room. Strange, not hip, decor with limited yard sale-style furniture, i.e. no headboard on the bed and no area rugs. One tiny closet. Worn-out carpeting leading up the public stairway. High hopes dashed. Save your $$$ and sanity.

  • Liked — Pancakes & crispy bacon made on hot plate in bar area.
  • Disliked — Absence of color, style, attention to design or care for clientele. Noisy, too.

The Vanessa Noel Hotel is housed in a lovingly restored 1840's building and the original footprint was preserved during the recent renovation because it is a historic property. The room that you stayed in is not small and is comparable in size to most standard rooms in other hotels and guesthouses on Nantucket. The VNH has been written up in numerous travel and fashion publications such as Boston Magazine-where we have been awarded “BEST OF NEW ENGLAND” multiple years, the Boston Globe, Travel & Leisure, New York Times, and Vogue to name a few all praising the refreshing, minimalist style and high quality aesthetic of the interiors. Countless guests call us and request the front desk for the brand and formula of the custom blended paint colors which created the creamy walls with golden under tones, sky blue ceilings and ultra high-gloss white trim that we use in each bedroom. The beds draped in custom Frette linens with nine pillows, marbled bathrooms complete with Bulgari bath products, flat screen televisions with DVD's and fully stocked mini bar makes the VNH by far the most luxurious and comfortable hotel in town and we share multiple guests with both The White Elephant and The Wauwinet hotels. The sofas and chairs are designed by Loyd Loom manufactured by Janus et Cie, a world renowned manufacturer of refined interior furnishings which are used in high-end private homes worldwide. The tables are designed by Armani Casa.
There is a full service commercial kitchen in the hotel where all of our breakfasts are prepared for our restaurant and from which waitresses serve and busboys clear. There has never been a hot plate set up in the restaurant/bar to prepare breakfast foods. We have many guests who return year after year, thrilled to be able to enjoy such a high standard of service and comfort in such a convenient and ideal location.

“Vanessa Noel - Avoid At All Costs”
1 of 5 stars Reviewed 5 July 2007

The hotel is marketed as being 'sleek' and offering 'every imaginable comfort'. However, the latter could not be further from the truth. While the hotel is decorated in a more 'hip' manner than most traditional Nantucket B&Bs, the Vanessa Noel does not offer any of the creature comforts one would expect for a room costing nearly $400/night. In my recent 3 night stay, I observed the following: a TV that looked like it was from the 1960s (I did not even attempt to turn it on), nearly no lightining in the bathroom, a rock hard bed, and noise from the street is unbearable. In addition, the creaking floorboards/doors make you aware of your neighbor's every move. I couldnt sleep past 8am even if I tried. STAY AWAY from here if possible and seek out an alternative place in Nantucket for your vacation.

The Vanessa Noel Hotel opened in 2002 after a complete renovation and has been updated every year or so since. The beds are made with custom Frette linens and nine pillows. Heavy feather duvets and cable knit cashmere throws drape the beds and sofas in each room.
All the bathrooms are marbled and contain Bulgari bath products. The televisions are all flat screen with DVD's and each room contains a fully stocked mini bar. The bathrooms all contain a normal 60 watt light bulb. Our staff is extremely helpful and would gladly have brought you a stronger watt bulb if you had requested it.

The hotel is located in the heart of downtown Nantucket. Although we are located on a quite street away from bars and restaurants occasionally one can hear the laughter of other Nantucket visitors and homeowners walking home at night. It can be experienced by all whom visit all hotel and guest houses in Nantucket including all who own homes in the Nantucket town.

“They could care less”

We stayed at The Vanessa Noel hotel in June so I am writing this review a bit late. Like many other hotels in Nantucket it is overpriced, which is par for the course. It is in a good location, that is the best thing about it. It purports to be a trendy, cool place with an all knowing owner (Vanessa Noel herself) BUT the owner needs some education in hotel management..The Facts: Rooms are incredibly small, noisy place, rooms on the street and also hear alot of noise from lobby (if you could call it that). There is little customer service or attention to guests.. I always had the feeling that we were the lucky ones to stay there. People who work there are clueless. My overall feeling is that the owner could take it or leave it if you ever came back there. I wouldnt return

Dear scooter
Nestled in the heart of Nantucket's downtown historic district, The Vanessa Noel Hotel is housed in an 1840's building whose original footprint was maintained during the hotel's renovation. The rooms are not small and are a comparable size to most other hotels in Nantucket which are also in historic buildings. The hotel is owned by shoe designer Vanessa Noel and run by a highly experienced and caring staff. The amazingly convenient, downtown location means that a degree of street noise that is unavoidable- such is the situation in all of the other hotel and guest houses located in the historic center. The small size of the hotel and the high ratio of hotel staff to guest ensures that each and all of our guests is doted upon. Many of our hotel staff have been working with the Vanessa Noel Hotel since we opened in 2002, our guests comforts and happiness are their main concerns. Vanessa Noel is also extremely dedicated to the happiness of her guests and is often on the premises. She does not announce herself so you might have even spoken with her and did not even know it. On many occasion when the flights have been delayed in the evening, due to dense fog, Vanessa Noel will leave a dinner party to personally retrieve her guests from the airport so they do not have to wait for the occasional taxi to drive by at that time of night. Nantucket is a wonderful magical town and we hope you visit us again.
