“Great location, super comfy, kind owners!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 22 September 2009

Stayed for a long weekend while we were here for a wedding. We enjoyed the private, back apartment with our 3 young kids. The nights were great as we walked all around downtown with the kids, came back to the Nesbitt for drinks on the back porch, and slept like babies in the comfy beds! Two bars were right out front if we wanted to leave the kids for a quick drink, but were never worried about patrons keeping us up at night. It's a great location and the owners are super friendly; respecting our privacy, but always there for a friendly conversation. Others from the wedding stayed in rooms in the main house and like that too. We wouldn't consider any other place to stay!

“pleasantly surprised”

I recently went for an overnight with a friend who grew up on the island and returns once a year or so. The reviews I read concerned me a bit, but my friend assured me that he had been going there for years, and while basic, it was acceptable, and a real bargain compared to nearby properties. I went expecting the worst, but was pleasantly surprised. The bathrooms are shared, but were clean and sufficient. The furniture is definitely worn, but again, clean and serviceable. They have a nice small porch. The continental breakfast was very good, and for short stays where most time will be spent out sightseeing, I will return based on value alone.

“Spend more money, sleep in a better Inn..”

We stayed here for two nights this past weekend and it was not worth the money they are charging. The furniture is old and rickety and the beds are terrible! The matresses haven't been changed since probably 1982. I slept poorly and so did the rest of my family who stayed there. Had I known about the poor sleeping situation, I would have definitely paid more money to stay somewhere else, and I generally can sleep anywhere. This inn needs an upgrade BADLY to keep charging the rates they are charging.

“Talk about living off your laurels! What a dump!”

Have you ever gone to an establishment for years and looked around one day and said "This has got to be one of the worst places on the island!" admittedly it happened to me just this year! If you want to feel like your business is unappreciated go here! All of the furniture here is not second hand- it is not even third hand, to be honest I don't know what it is but one thing is for sure (in my opinion) The proprietors did not pay much for it, if any at all. As I was sitting on their hodgepodge metal chair from from what decade I could only guess, the chair broke and I was speared by an old rusty bolt that punctured my skin and forced me to go the hospital for a tetanus shot! The response from the owners was a perfunctory "I'm sorry" and yet they continued to leave the identical chair next to the one that had just collapsed on the porch! If an ideal breakfast consists of what tastes like watered down cranberry juice with old hard-boiled eggs and bananas then this place is for you. Oh one other thing I paid over $142.00 to stay here!? Finally in regard to the new owners; They are the old owners Son and Daughter in law! I registered my complaints with The Nantucket Visitors Service, The Chamber of Commerce and soon the Nantucket Mirror and Observor (The island Newspaper)

How many times has this happened to you - you check into a hotel, stay there a couple nights, and then come back one night to find someone else staying in your room?

I know... it happens all the time. Oh, wait, no it doesn't. While we stayed at the Nesbitt Inn, the crotchety old owner managed to rent out our room to someone else. So, low and behold, when we came back one night we were locked out (an impressive feat because you have to lock it from the inside so we knew someone was inside).

We went downstairs and rang the bell repeatedly. Nothing. We rang and knocked and made noise (he lives there, so we knew he was THERE). And, mind you, this is approximately 10:30pm at night. So, thankfully, we knew other people at a different location and slept on their floor. In the morning we went over and the befuddled and moronic owner didn't understand what had happened. He then announced that he had moved us to a different room and proceeded to take us to that room. Surprise! He ended up barging in on a family that was in the room we were "in." The family, a father and mother and their two kids, looked as though the cops had just barged in (it was 7 in the morning). And, if you think about it, if you were on vacation and someone stormed into your room at 7am, you might think it was the cops too.

After about 30 minutes of searching the hotel he "located" our new room and we got our luggage and got the hell out of there.

Is it the cheapest place on Nantucket? Yes. But if you like not having locks on your door and no A/C, private bath/toilet in the middle of the summer and the potential to be kicked out of your room and moved to another - without notice - then by all means enjoy the Nesbitt.
