“Decent place but...”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed 18 October 2009

I've been to this Hotel twice before and I decided to go there last week-end as well.
The price is reasonable (around 45 EU per night for the single room) and so is the comfort.
As others pointed out the hotel is on the sixth flooor but the lift will only take you to the fifth. The location is as central as it can be and the view (from the terrace only!) is great.
However I have to point out that, despite my written booking and confirmation, when I arrived there (around 8 pm) I found out that my room had been given to someone else.
You can imagine my disappointment. The receptionist apologised and suggested he could send me to another (unknown) place sowhere the other side of the river :-/
To sum up: decent (but nothing more), ten rooms or so (more a B&B than an hotel), no Breakfast provided, rather unprofessional management.

“Narnia”

This is one weird hotel. There is almost no street presence. The door is the door to an office block - a real dingy, communist-era, concrete, bad office block. There is no parking, which makes it awkward to drop off luggage. You will then have to lug the luggage up some stairs to the lift, take it to the fifth floor, get out and take the stairs up one more floor. All this time, the alarm bells are ringing. On the sixth floor (the former roof), you find a door and bell push. When the buzzer goes, you go through, leaving 1970s Yugoslavia behind and find yourself in Ikea. A long corridor with immaculately furnished rooms on either side, leading along to a balcony room at the end with views over the main square, bridge and old town.

From outside, it is obvious that the hotel has literally been built on the roof of the office block; to a totally different design spec, but it will charm you instantly if you get as far as the door.

The rooms don't have views - they are reserved for the balcony bar; but the rooms do have aircon and things work. Unlike another reviewer, the only sound I heard was the pigeons on the windowsill. The staff were friendly; especially one man who was happy to chat about Macedonian politics and independence. There was no overcharging and we paid a slightly lower price than we had expected. Other hotels in Skopje charge far more.

“Fine but be prepared”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed 20 December 2008

The Hotel Square itself is in a great location, right in the middle of Skopje and close to the old town and new town.
The Stone Bridge itself (a rather dissapointing national monument) is the centre of the 'nightlife' of Skopje and so you're close to the action in this hotel.
I say close, that's horizontally. Vertically you are a fair way off - as the hotel is on the SIXTH floor of an office block. This was a surprise to us as it didn't seem to be publicised anywhere. There is a life though - that works as long as someone has shut the door after vacating it on another floor.

On arrival at the hotel, be aware of hidden charges and fees. We were told we had to pay a 'tourist tax' - alarm bells start ringing of course - but this may well have been legitimate. It was certainly about £20 more (for the three of us) than on our hostelbookers total.
There is a bar and 'restaurant' on a lovely balcony in the hotel - we recommend taking your own food and drink onto it though as they will overcharge for everything if they can. One of our party ordered a beer, assuming the prices in the room would be right, only for him to have started the drink and be told that those prices were 'old prices'.

I mentioned that the hotel was close to the 'nightlife' - this is true and the sound levels reflect that. If you're not comfortable sleeping with music and screams coming from outside, don't stay here. Bearing in mind that Skopje is very hot in the summer, the windows will probably have to be open. There is adequate air conditioning in the rooms as well.

The bathroom and sheets were clean and the towels changed daily - as you'd expect.

Overall, not a bad hotel per se, but one for a younger person and thus, ironically, the more naive. Be on your guard and don't be afraid to stand your ground over charges - you will find that you will have to do this everywhere in Skopje.

“Does the job”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 10 September 2008

I was in Skopje for the Macedonia-Scotland football match, and I was staying in this hotel!

It has a great location! Right on the main Square in the heart city, but the only problem is the street it is located in is not known by ANY taxi drivers, so they drop you off at the McDonalds at the top of the road and say "its somewhere round about here", and have to walk about to find it!

When walking about to find keep your eyes open, as it is in an office block, and not very well sign posted, but there is a "HOTEL SQUARE" sign down the side of the building.

The actual hotel is on the 6th floor, so you have to take the lift to the 5th floor (that is as far as it will go), but the button on the lift is broken, so you have to push it a few times till it lights up!

The hotel is actually just 10 rooms on the top floor, but the rooms are really big and VERY clean!

All rooms have the usual shower and tv, but with 90% of the tv channels in English, it is very good!

Breakfast I was told was an extra 5 euros a day! I would no bother with this and go to the bakers just to the right of the hotel as you walk out, as they do the BEST cheese and chicken toastie, and for 2 euro's you can get that, a crasuant and a coffee!

All in all this hotel was better than I was expecting, and if I was in town again I would stay here!

  • Liked — Loaction and Price
  • Disliked — Could be more in the way of signs saying where hotel is!

“Basic and Comfortable”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 28 August 2008

Hotel: Basic but clean rooms with comfortable bedding. Friendly staff. Hotel occupies the 6th (top) floor of a building shared with other business's/ organisations. Elevator goes to the 5th floor only, then use stairs to the 6th floor.

Location: Situated in the very heart of Skopje in the pedestrian area, overlooking the Vardar river and stone bridge. Very central and walking distance to all attractions, cafe, shops etc.

* Good for business people or short stay or young on a budget.. A little noisy at night due to it's location near cafes/restaurants/bars/clubs.
