My husband and I were looking for a reasonably close (but still fun!) place to spend our 10 year anniversary. We chose Annapolis... on the water, we could walk everywhere - everything we wanted. We chose to stay at the State House Inn. The location is great - very convient - walking distance - to all of Annapolis' many attractions. The State Circle is at the front (galleries, a few restaurants, some boutiques), and the cobblestone "main" street is at the back (restaurants, bars, shops, the harbor) and its own Zagat rated restaurant downstairs, this looked like a good choice.
Some of the reviews looked iffy, but we definitely prefer b&bs and locally owned businesses and we thought it would be a good chance to take. We were so pleased! We stayed in the Chesapeake room. It was roomy and - although a bit dated - very comfortable. The mattress wasn't luxurious or anything but the room and bathroom were very clean, and we had a great view. The front window looks out onto the beautifully landscaped lawn of the State House, and the side window looks out onto the street, with the Harbor in the distance.
The "office hours" are quite limited, but I feel that we were offered sufficient ways to get in touch with staff if we needed anything. I thought the owner, the manager, and the housekeeper were all very nice and very proud of their inn.
Don't expect a luxurious b&b... but it's far more personal than a hotel. We had a great visit! Oh - and the restaurant downstairs was wonderful. A bit of a splurge! But it was our anniversary and the food was great. :)
