“Great little place”

This is a 3-room hotel in the heart of Panama City's funky and wonderful Casco Viejo neighborhood. I stayed at the Canal House only one night, but I really liked it. The set-up is somewhat unusual - a lot of public space for just 3 rooms, and you have to ring the bell to get into the building (but they always opened the door pretty quickly).

I had a large and comfortable suite, very nicely furnished. No outside windows, but you do get light from skylights and such. Breakfast was terrific, and the staff is nice. Not cheap by any means, but seems in line with the other Casco Viejo places.

“Fantastic Suite in Casco Viejo”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 21 January 2012

We stayed just one night in the Miraflores Suite in the Canal House in January 2012. The location and the service make this property one of the best in Casco Viejo. The wrap around balcony allows you to observe all the activity in the area including the construction during the day and the nightlife as well. The number of buildings undergoing renovation is remarkable. Although there are plenty of buildings in ruin with people squatting in them, the transformation going on in Casco Viejo is impressive. Despite this we never felt unsafe or threatened at any time. In three years this area of town will be spectacular. In the mean time if you are willing to tolerate a bit of trash here and there along with the sounds of construction during the day, you will be rewarded with many cute bars, shops and historic churches. The Panamanians were all very friendly and helpful. Although the staff in the day time were fairly fluent in English, the night staff are not quite as proficient. They offered a very good breakfast in the morning in the common area on the first floor. The Miraflores suite was very spacious with a huge bathroom and shower. The one drawback was that the hot water was not quite as hot as it could have been. The house iPad and free wifi were a nice feature. We can't wait to return.

“Excellent, authentic, professional.”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 15 January 2012

Canal house and las Clementinas are run by the same people, both are excellent. Canal house has 3 rooms we rented the whole place for our fsmily for a night. Las Clementinas has more rooms. Rooms are fabulous. Both are in renovated old buildings so if you need elevators this is not for you. I love the old city. It is safe, interesting, authentic and has some fabulous restaurants. Parts of the old city are still slum, it is in transition but you are totally safe, as a woman I walk alone at night in there and feel absolutely safe. I prefer to stay in here than in panama city itself, it has soul. Making bookings via email or on line can be slow, you are better off calling them. I go to panama often. Highly recommended.

Room Tip: Speak to the staff, they are very helpful. The smallest room in the canal house can be noisy if the...

“Top Quality B&B”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 9 January 2012

This is a really excellent place. We stayed in the Miraflores suite, which is massive and spotless. They provide complimentary wi-fi (sadly all too rare) and an ipad in the room for guest use. Finding English-speaking staff is a bit of an issue but the Spanish-speaking ladies couldn't be more patient and accommodating. Bear in mind that this is a b&b rather than a full-service hotel (so no concierge, elevator or gym for example), and you won't be disappointed. It's obviously smack bang in the middle of Casco Viejo so getting around the area is easy.

“Great Find!”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 8 January 2012

We stayed in the large Mira Flores suite of the Canal House and loved it. The staff were very friendly, responsive and accommodating. The rooms each had their own AC units, the bathroom was huge, the dressing area is nice and the upstairs nook is a bonus. The TV is a little small given how far away it is from the bed. The common area is a nice touch and breakfast to order every morning is a great way to start the day. My only complaint is that the neighbors partied long into the night and were spread out in the street in front of the hotel. There was not much to be done about this and when that building is bought and renovated this problem will go away. Hopefully soon.

Room Tip: Sleep quality poor only due to the neighbor's blasting their music in the streets late into the...
