We recently spent five nights at the Balboa Inn, and we can’t imagine having chosen a better place to stay in Panama City. First of all, the canal zone is a tranquil, laid-back, relaxing part of the city—in our view, so much more desirable than other downtown areas, such as El Cangrejo or Bella Vista, for example. It really felt like a tropical oasis in the city, but getting to other parts of the city was still easy, fast and affordable. Most of what we did was actually closer to the Balboa Inn than other parts of the city, so it worked very well for us. It was well situated for reaching Cerro Ancon, Miraflores Locks, The Amador Causeway, The Canal Administration Building, Casco Viejo, and the Contemporary Art Museum.
The value was very good. Rooms were spotlessly clean, pleasant and comfortable, equipped with safes, air conditioning, and televisions. We slept very well, waking to the sound of birds chirping each morning. Hearty breakfasts are served outside on the patio, which is a relaxing space that's ideal for bird-watching since it’s surrounded by trees and wildlife.
We thoroughly enjoyed getting to know Bill and Mike, the innkeepers, who are extremely attentive, accommodating, helpful, and fun. They are excellent hosts who really go above and beyond for their guests, and we hope to cross paths again with them some day!
A note about another review: It was never a problem to return to the Inn and ring the doorbell at any hour. Bill and Mieke made it clear that we could return at any time, and that this was not something to worry about. We actually liked not having to worry about carrying a key with us in the city, so we did not see this as a problem in any way.
The Balboa Inn is a relaxing, laid-back place in an ideal location. We highly recommend it.
