This was the most disappointing resort experience we have ever had. There was nothing about this resort that made our trip enjoyable. We were stay here for 5 days as a part of group of 100+ business owners. At the same time as our visit there was also 3 other unrelated business groups at the resort.
The overall service was the worst I have ever experienced. The staff acted like we were inconveniencing them at the bars, restaurants and concierge desk. The staff would often ignore the guests. There are stools at the swim up pool bar but the bar tenders never go down to the pool level, so if you wanted a drink you had to get out of the pool and walk around to the other side of the bar. Occasionally, one waitress would walk around the pool area and take drink orders but not very often maybe twice in an afternoon.
The food was the worst I’ve experienced at an all inclusive. This is the 4th brand of AIs that I have been to and this set an all new low in food quality. We did not find any of the food to be good. A lot of the food was simply inedible. The Light House restaurant, is supposed to have the best food, but we were not impressed. I had the Sea Bass, which tasted like it was previously frozen, was over cooked and dry. The service was slow and inattentive.
You must have a reservation to eat at the Light House, they start taking reservations at 7am for that day. There were a lot of upset people in our group and guests because most people were never allowed to eat at the Light House. They only schedule 1 reservation every 30 minutes between 6pm – 9:30. When we ate there over half of the restaurant was empty. They also said they wouldn’t accept any party larger than 6 people, not a good policy when a resort is bringing in large groups that would like to eat together. (We began to wonder if this was the hotels way of forcing guests who had already paid for the all inclusive to go offsite to eat. It worked, we ate downtown two nights and the food was amazing!)
The rooms were small and lacked standard maintenance. The drain in our shower was so slow that within a minute your feet were covered with standing water. The air filter in the ac unit hadn’t been cleaned in a very long time and made a high pitched noise. Below the ac unit mold was growing on both the bedroom and bathroom wall. The toilet in our kids room plugged everyday, and eventually the water supply to the toilet stopped completely. That required a major repair. The complaints about lack of washcloths are true, they were there when we checked in and then gone the next day. We asked housekeeping for them and they told us they were out.
You should know going to this location, you are not going for the beach. The location is close to the entrance to the Canal and the water is dirty and, in my opinion, not meant for swimming. However, at low tide walking along the beach was enjoyable. If you enjoy shelling there are shells everywhere. Included in our AI package was sea kayaking and they had a promoted hiking through the rain forest and then sea kayaking back to the resort. When we inquired about doing this we were told that the one person at the hotel that did this was sick and so it wasn’t available but for $20 per person they would have someone take us on a hike through the rainforest. We ended up taking the sea kayaks out from the beach and paddled out and around the point to two different beaches and back. Then another day, we hiked the rainforest on our own, the trailhead is marked and the path is well traveled.
The grounds of the hotel are well manicured and the setting is beautiful. It is amazing to watch the constant flow of ships waiting for passage into the canal. But I am sure there are plenty of hotels with the same view that would value guests.
