If they get the kinks sorted out this will be the place to come in Panama. My room was exceptionally clean, my linens beautiful and my bed super comfy. My friend thought the bed a little soft but liked it and slept well. I LOVED the bed. There's no beach and limited direct sun but I just wanted a bit anyway to tell the truth. I loved sitting outside by the pool without being too hot. There were light breezes that kept us cool and fresh. .
The Tejas restaurant is not to be missed. I was told we had to dress up to go there so I avoided it until the last night. I REALLY wanted to go so I put on a nice top and had my friend hide behind me. They let us in graciously and I noticed other much more casually dressed so I don't know what the true story is there. Throw something nice in just in case. I had the Spiced Shrimp that had a divine curry sauce and my friend had a curry sauced fish that she made very happy noises about.
I had a Mojito and fresh fish out by the pool the first night and loved it. Ok, I had 1 and a half Mojitos... I thought there was plenty of alcohol in my drink and had to stop half way through my second. I thought the cost was typical for a hotel like this. It's not cheap but I didn't come to the Trump Hotel expecting cheap.
I worked out in the gym every morning and liked it. It needs fans but otherwise is very nice.
A few stores are open on the lower level including a coffee shop (yummy), a well stocked general store, a sweet shop and a few others. I'm sure more will open soon but one's that are open were handy.
Oh my FAVORITE thing about this place was the lack of smoking. I have a hard time with it and there was NONE. I was told that no smoking is allowed in Panama in public spaces inside or out like the pool. This fact alone dazzled me! LOVE IT! Panama is wonderful.
No Casino yet, no spa yet.
The hotel is close to a huge fancy mall called the Multi Plaza where you can shop, dine (sushi was GREAT) or catch a movie. There is another mall a little further down the road but I didn't go. I'm not a big shopper really. Two blocks from the hotel is a supermarket and a few other restaurants. A taxi FROM the mall as $2-5, TO the mall from the hotel is much more. Walk across the street and catch the taxi if you are cost conscious. Try not to need a taxi at rush hour in the afternoon, it can take quite a while if you are a gringo. You can take a taxi from the hotel anywhere you want to go. It always cost me way more from the hotel rather than to it. There are no street signs in Panama and no exit signs so I wouldn't even think of driving myself.
Cons: No breakfast by the pool, only inside away from the water and frankly, there is no reason to be anywhere except looking at the water so this is a big hole in the hotels offerings.
The shower is dangerously slippery. I'm sure it's on their "to do" list as it's definitely going to hurt someone seriously. The water leaked out under my shower onto the slick polished stone floor as well and created more danger. Every day we had to lay our extra towels down to stop the flow and somehow it would get all over the bath area.
The fridge got stocked inconsistently but did I REALLY need to eat out of the mini bar every day...I don't think so! :)
One concierge was horrible to deal with. Apparently he felt I couldn't pay for anything and kept saying things that indicated I wouldn't want to do this or that or pay for this or that. It was very annoying and we gave up. So I explained to the front desk staff that I was having problems communicating with him and she recommended I speak with the concierge that came on later. He was great and very accommodating but completely forgot to book one trip and kept changing my scheduled departure time on the first one until I was leaving way later than was ideal. The concierge here needs a bit of work. The tour operator they use is experiencing more work than they can handle I am told so that was the reason my second trip was completely ignored. It would have been nice if they had told me I wasn't doing anything that day. So, when scheduling trips with them, make sure to dog them and check back to make sure it's happening. If you are cost conscious, just get a taxi somewhere other than the hotel. They'll drive you around all day for $55 or less. Have them drive you to the Gamboa Resort, go to Monkey Island (only in the early morning) and then take a the little lift through the forest. Remember animals wake up, eat, then nap so go in the morning, not afternoon.
All in all I had a great time. Panama is a healthy friendly country and the Trump is a great place to stay.
